test(process): the two process-wait repros wait for what they check, not a fixed time - #947
Two repro tests no longer fail on a busy Windows PC, and only test files change. They gave a command a fixed time to print, but the command starts through powershell.exe, which takes about a second on its own; now they wait for the output they check.
What this fixes
Problem
Fix
test-start-process-timeout-block.js Test 2 fails with "should have captured progress output".
It reads with readUntil() until a progress line arrives, up to 30 s.
Test 3 of both repros fails with "should return quickly via prompt, took …ms".
The command gets 30 s and no time check; the early_exit reason shows the prompt ended the wait.
Where to look
test/helpers/process-output.jsreadUntil(pid, done, timeoutMs, what): reads with readProcessOutput() until done holds, on waitUntil().
test/repro/test-start-process-timeout-block.js Test 2: readUntil() in try/finally; it now checks the process is still running when the output is read; the cap checks are unchanged.
Test 3 there, and testPromptStillReturnsEarly() in test/repro/test-process-wait-client-cap.js: a 30 s timeout, no time check.
How to verify
On Windows with the PC busy, for example 6 node -e "for(;;){}" pinned to 4 CPUs, and the test pinned to the same 4 (start /affinity F):
git checkout main && npm run build && node test/repro/run-repro.js test-start-process-timeout-block.js test-process-wait-client-cap.js # fails before
git checkout fix/timeout-block-waits && npm run build && node test/repro/run-repro.js test-start-process-timeout-block.js test-process-wait-client-cap.js # passes after
Tests and results
Windows, before: the timeout-block repro fails 3 of 3 with 4 CPUs busy; the process-wait repro fails alone ("took 1024ms").
Windows, after: 3 of 3 and 10 of 10 pass with the CPUs busy, and the same without.
At 39a6756e, with output that never comes, Test 2 fails and stops its command.
Rebased on main 882c5b86, both repros pass alone on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Walkthrough
The changes add a helper that polls process output until a condition succeeds or the wait times out. Regression tests use output checks and longer wait limits, verify process state, and remove an elapsed-time assertion.
The updated tests can pass despite delayed prompt handling or without observing progress during the capped wait. Restore those checks without making shell startup part of their timing limits before merging.

Explanation
The title names the main change: the two process-wait repro tests now wait for the condition they check instead of a fixed time limit. It is specific and matches the objectives, which describe replacing fixed time limits with readUntil() waits and removing elapsed-time assertions. It is short and free of noise. The title uses the "test(process):" prefix, which is a conventional form.

early_exit proves only that prompt detection ended the wait. It does not prove that detection was prompt. A detector delayed by several seconds can still return early_exit before the 30-second timeout while the child remains alive.
Assert the delay from res.timingInfo.firstOutputTime to the numeric res.timingInfo.endTime in both Test 3 cases. Preserve the existing 1-second bound, but exclude shell startup time.
Suggested fix
assert(
res.timingInfo.exitReason.startsWith('early_exit'),
`expected an early_exit reason, got "${res.timingInfo.exitReason}"`
);
+ assert.notStrictEqual(res.timingInfo.firstOutputTime, undefined,+ 'prompt output should have a firstOutputTime');+ const promptDelay = res.timingInfo.endTime - res.timingInfo.firstOutputTime;+ assert(promptDelay < 1000,+ `should detect prompt within 1000ms of first output, took ${promptDelay}ms`);
Apply the same assertions in testPromptProcessReturnsEarly().

In both Test 3 cases, including testPromptProcessReturnsEarly(), assert that

under 1,000 ms; keep the existing early_exit checks and measure only after first
output to exclude shell startup time.

Match the process output, not the formatted response.
readProcessOutput includes status text and the placeholder (No output in requested range). A predicate such as text.includes('output') therefore succeeds for a silent process. Pass only process output to done. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Test 3 of test-process-wait-client-cap.js, bounding prompt detection after the first output: declined. This PR removes time checks that fail on a busy PC, where the shell alone can take seconds to start, and the test's comment says so. The early_exit reason still shows that the prompt ended the wait.
readUntil() in test/helpers/process-output.js: true, the text it collects includes the read's own lines, such as [Reading 3 new lines (total: 3 lines)] and (No output in requested range). Its only use checks for progress, which those lines never contain.
Add a deterministic wait-phase case for non-prompt output.
The current fixture can produce its first progress line after executeCommand returns at the 800 ms cap. readUntil then finds the line, and the existing assertions still pass. This does not test whether progress observed during the wait is incorrectly classified as a prompt.
timingInfo.outputEvents records event timestamps, so compare the progress event with timingInfo.endTime in a fixture that guarantees output before the wait ends. Keep the current startup-tolerant case because requiring this shell-launched command to emit within 800 ms would recreate the Windows startup flakiness.

Keep the existing startup-tolerant readUntil check, and add a separate fixture

occurred during the wait and is not classified as a prompt.

About the nitpick in the 15:40 review (a deterministic wait-phase case for non-prompt output): not adding it in this PR. A fixture that is sure to print within the 800 ms wait brings back the Windows startup timing this PR removes, as the comment itself notes, so the startup-tolerant case stays as it is.
Test 2 of test/repro/test-start-process-timeout-block.js gave a chatty
command 800 ms (the wait cap under test) to print. On Windows the command
starts through powershell.exe, which takes about a second on its own and
several seconds on a busy PC, so the first progress line often arrived
only after the call had returned, and the test failed with "should have
captured progress output".
Test 2 still checks that the call returns at the cap with the command
running. It then reads the command's output with readUntil(), a new
helper in test/helpers/process-output.js that calls readProcessOutput()
(the read_process_output tool) until a progress line arrives, here for
up to 30 s, and checks that the command is still running then. Like
waitUntil(), which it is built on, readUntil() throws at its limit with
the caller's description of what it waited for.

…reason
Test 3 checked that a command printing a prompt returns within 1 s of
the call, a time that includes the shell's start: about 1 s for
powershell.exe on a quiet Windows PC, and 4-15 s on a busy one, where
the call also ran into the test's 5 s timeout. It now gives the command
a 30 s timeout, asserts that MAX_PROCESS_WAIT_MS doesn't cap it, and
relies on the early_exit reason, checked as before, to show that the
prompt ended the wait rather than the timeout.

…eason
Test 3 of test/repro/test-process-wait-client-cap.js is the same guard
as the timeout-block repro's Test 3, and failed for the same reason: it
checked that a command printing a prompt returns within 1 s of the call,
a time that includes the shell's start, about 1 s for powershell.exe on
a quiet Windows PC ("should return quickly via prompt, took 1024ms").
It now gives the command a 30 s timeout, which its existing assertion
keeps below MAX_PROCESS_WAIT_MS, and relies on the early_exit reason,
checked as before, to show that the prompt ended the wait.

…read fails
Test 2 of test/repro/test-start-process-timeout-block.js stopped its
command with cleanup() only after readUntil() returned. When readUntil()
threw (no progress line within its limit, or a failed read), the test
failed with the command still running and never stopped it. The read and
the running check now sit in try/finally, so cleanup() runs either way.
Tests 1 and 3 call cleanup() right after the command returns, with
nothing in between that can throw.
