Docker PDF rendering now uses the image's Chromium, including with a kept home folder. The installers refresh Desktop Commander in the persistent volume and narrow restart selection and executable discovery to Claude Desktop.

What this fixes

Problem Fix
Downloaded Chrome cannot start on Alpine. Install Chromium/fonts and prefer system Chromium in the image.
Persistent /usr hides the newer image. Refresh dc-system after stopping its running containers.
Broad restart matching also stops Claude Code. Match Claude Desktop's executable location or program.
PowerShell misreads ProgramFiles(x86) or discovers an unrelated executable. Brace the variable name and restrict fallback discovery to Desktop folders.
  • Chromium runs without its browser sandbox in the image; container isolation remains.
  • Volume enumeration failure or a still-running container stops the update before copying; copying is not transactional.
  • The package-contract repro also reads npm 10's build-prefixed JSON output.

Where to look

  • Dockerfile, src/tools/pdf/markdown.ts: Chromium installation, selection and launch.
  • install-docker.sh: volume update and desktop-process selection.
  • install-docker.ps1: volume update and shared desktop folders.
  • test/docker-installer-*.test.js, test/docker/*.js: standalone regressions and Docker acceptance.

How to verify

Run in separate checkouts with dependencies installed and PowerShell available:

git checkout c591c72a
node test/docker-installer-claude-folders.test.js
# fails before: malformed x86 folder and unbraced variable names
git checkout 13e32912
node test/docker-installer-claude-folders.test.js
# passes after on Windows/Linux; exit 3 means no PowerShell, not a pass

Answers that change

Before After
Docker write_pdf: browser spawn ENOENT PDF written and readable
Reinstall retains older Desktop Commander Persistent volume receives the newer application
Restart can stop Claude Code; x86 installation missed Narrow desktop selection; x86 folder recognized

Historical 13e32912 checks requested 204 files per platform:

  • Windows Node 22.23.4: 197 initial passes, one cached pass, one isolated-rerun pass, five remaining failures.
  • macOS Node 22.23.4: 203 initial passes and one cached pass.
  • Linux Node 22.23.3: 202 initial passes, one cached pass and one isolated-rerun pass.

The cached file is the same-tree/runtime package-contract check. Initial Windows node-local-timeout and Linux config-usage-cross-process failures remain recorded despite isolated passes.

The five Windows failures persist alone: runner-arguments, bootstrap-threadpool, env-threadpool-timing, withtimeout-leak and edit-block-performance. Existing baseline/#968 comparisons classify them as inherited; they are not green exits or a combined-head test.

The folder regression fails at c591c72a and passes at 13e32912 on Windows/Linux. macOS skips PowerShell; both shell-based neighboring tests pass. Package-contract checks pass on all three.

Both Docker files pass on Windows. At 13e32912, Mac PDF acceptance is retained from the earlier attempt; installer-volume acceptance subsequently passes in 58 seconds under 300 seconds. Historical timeout receipts remain. No new combined-head/full-suite run is claimed.

At 4e9d570c, the executable-discovery regression changes from four intended failures to four passes on Windows PowerShell and pwsh. Neighboring folder and eight restart assertions pass; independent source review reports zero blockers.

Current 82c24024 replays all 19 own commits onto e701d2b0, preserving messages, changed lines and touched-file blobs, then corrects two inherited comment spellings. No new runtime or three-platform test was run for that integration. Codespell CI succeeds at this head; configured local Codespell 2.4.3 also exits zero. Historical PDF, Docker and inherited Windows failures retain their original scope.

Walkthrough

The pull request updates Docker image contents and PDF generation, changes installer system-volume updates and Claude Desktop process handling, adds Docker and installer tests, and adjusts npm pack output parsing in a release-package test.

Changes: Docker PDF support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Docker image and PDF runtime
.dockerignore, Dockerfile, src/utils/system-info.ts, src/tools/pdf/markdown.ts, test/helpers/docker-image.js, test/docker/test-write-pdf-in-image.js
The image excludes node_modules and dist, and installs Chromium and Noto fonts. PDF generation detects Docker, checks system Chrome before the Puppeteer cache, and adds --no-sandbox in Docker. New helpers and an integration test check PDF writing in fresh and volume-mounted containers, including a simulated unusable cached Chrome.

Docker installer updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
System volume refresh
install-docker.sh, install-docker.ps1, test/docker-installer-volume-update.test.js, test/docker/test-installer-system-volume.js, test/helpers/docker-installers.js
Both installers stop containers using dc-system and copy the pulled image’s /usr into that volume after removing /target/src/app. Tests check error handling, data preservation, marker replacement, repeated updates, and PDF writing.
Claude Desktop process targeting
install-docker.sh, install-docker.ps1, test/docker-installer-restart.test.js, test/docker-installer-claude-folders.test.js, test/helpers/docker-installers.js
The installers use platform-specific process checks to stop Claude Desktop. Tests check that Desktop processes are identified and stopped while Claude Code and editor processes remain running.

npm pack output parsing

Layer / File(s) Summary
npm pack output parsing
test/repro/test-release-packages-ship-contract.js
The reproduction script accounts for build output before the JSON array from npm pack and updates its npm 10 instructions.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 13e32

The update is mergeable with awareness of a narrow Windows fallback risk: when Claude Desktop cannot be located normally, the installer may launch another application's Claude.exe. Failed container stops now prevent volume refresh while containers remain running.

Nitpick Stop runInstallerPs1 when install-docker.ps1 has parse errors.

53-53: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Stop runInstallerPs1 when install-docker.ps1 has parse errors.

runInstallerPs1 passes [ref]$null for the parse errors and discards them. It then loads only function and assignment statements. A syntax error in another top-level statement goes unnoticed, so a test that reads only stdout can still pass. Capture the parse errors and exit with a non-zero code before any statement loads.

The current installer does not trigger this path. The change closes a gap in the default test run, and a syntax error in the installer would otherwise reach users undetected.

Suggested fix

Nitpick Cover Claude Desktop detection and stop under Program Files (x86) in the restart test.

43-44: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Cover Claude Desktop detection and stop under Program Files (x86) in the restart test.

The folders test checks only the folder list. Find-ClaudeProcess uses that list to identify Claude Desktop processes, and Stop-ClaudeProcess stops the processes that Find-ClaudeProcess returns. The restart test places its Windows desktop stand-in only under Program Files\WindowsApps. A change that stops Find-ClaudeProcess from matching processes under the x86 folder can pass both tests.

Add a Windows-only stand-in under the redirected x86 folder. The restart test then checks that Find-ClaudeProcess finds it and that Stop-ClaudeProcess stops it.

Suggested test change
 const desktops = [await startStandIn(desktopFile)];
+if (windows) desktops.push(await startStandIn(path.join(moved['ProgramFiles(x86)'], 'Claude', 'Claude.exe')));
 if (platform === 'linux') desktops.push(await startStandIn(path.join(electronDir, 'electron'), [path.join(electronDir, 'resources', 'app.asar')]));

Comment thread install-docker.ps1 Resolved
mihailt and others added 20 commits November 4, 2026 15:51
Builds the image from the checkout, starts it as the Docker install does
(docker run -i --rm, Docker's default security), calls write_pdf and reads
the PDF's text back with read_file. On main write_pdf answers "Failed to
launch the browser process: spawn .../chrome ENOENT": the Chrome that
Desktop Commander downloads can't start on Alpine.

.dockerignore leaves out node_modules and dist, so the image installs and
builds its own and the test builds from the checkout as it is. It needs
Docker, so it is in test/docker/, which no test runner reads.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The image is Alpine, and the Chrome that Desktop Commander downloads can't
start there, so write_pdf failed with "Failed to launch the browser
process: spawn .../chrome ENOENT".

- Dockerfile: installs Alpine's chromium and font-noto. Desktop Commander
already looks for /usr/bin/chromium and uses it.
- markdown.ts: in the Docker image Chromium starts with --no-sandbox. Under
Docker's default security Chromium can't start its own sandbox, and as
root it refuses to start without one. The container keeps it apart from
the host; everywhere else Chrome keeps its sandbox.
- system-info.ts: isDockerImage() (MCP_CLIENT_DOCKER=true, which only the
Dockerfile sets) is the one check for the image, used by
  detectContainerEnvironment() and markdown.ts.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
A second case: the home folder is a volume that holds a Chrome an older
image downloaded into Desktop Commander's Puppeteer cache, as the Docker
installers keep /root in a volume. That Chrome can't start on Alpine, and
Desktop Commander picks it before the image's Chromium, so write_pdf still
answers "spawn .../chrome ENOENT".

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ppeteer cache

Desktop Commander's Puppeteer cache is in the home folder, which the Docker
installers keep in a volume. A Chrome that an older image downloaded there
can't start on Alpine, and Desktop Commander picked it before the image's
Chromium, so write_pdf still failed with "spawn .../chrome ENOENT" for
those users. In the image the lookup now skips the cache, so it finds the
system's Chromium. Nothing changes outside the image.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
npm 10 (Node 22) runs the prepare script, the build, during npm pack even
with ignore-scripts, and the build's output comes before the JSON on
stdout, so the test stopped with "TSFILE: ... is not valid JSON". It now
reads the JSON from the line that is just "[". npm 11 prints only the JSON.
The tarball is the same: npm 10 rebuilds dist from the same sources.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
install-docker.sh and install-docker.ps1 keep the container's /usr in the
volume dc-system, so the tools the AI installs survive restarts. The volume
also hides a newer image's /usr: its Desktop Commander and its Chromium. The
test builds an older image (the Dockerfile without its Chromium line) and
the new one, runs the older one with the installers' four volumes, installs
jq with apk and a small npm tool, writes a home file, and leaves a container
of it running. Then it calls the installers' own update step,
install-docker.sh's and then install-docker.ps1's, and starts the new image
with the volumes: the step must stop the running container, change nothing
the second time, write_pdf must work, the three things must be kept, and
the volume must have the new Desktop Commander. Today neither installer has
the step, so the new image runs the older Desktop Commander and write_pdf
fails with ENOENT.

test/helpers/docker-installers.js runs the installers' functions without
installing anything, as test/remote-launchers.test.js runs the launchers:
from a temporary copy of each installer with the test's image and volume in
place of its own, install-docker.sh up to its main part and
install-docker.ps1's variables and functions.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
install-docker.sh and install-docker.ps1 keep the container's /usr in the
volume dc-system, so the tools the AI installs survive restarts. A newer
image's /usr stayed hidden behind it: users kept the Desktop Commander of
their first install, and no Chromium for write_pdf, even after the
installer pulled a new image.

After pulling and creating the volumes, both installers now stop the
containers that use dc-system and run, in the pulled image, the same copy:
Desktop Commander's folder is replaced, and the rest of the image's /usr is
copied over what the volume has, so what the AI installed stays. If the
copy fails, they say so and suggest a reset. The command is in each
installer, so it works with any image, the one on Docker Hub today too.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…op app

install-docker.ps1's Find-ClaudeProcess finds every process with "claude"
in its name, path or command line, and install-docker.sh stops the same on
Linux with pkill -f "claude", so restarting the AI app also stopped Claude
Code sessions. The test starts a stand-in where the desktop app runs from
and one where Claude Code runs from, asks the installer which processes are
the desktop app, and runs the stop step only when that is the desktop
stand-in alone. Then the desktop stand-in must have stopped and the Claude
Code stand-in must still run. Today Find-ClaudeProcess also finds the
Claude Code stand-in and every Claude Code session on the machine.

On Windows the folders install-docker.ps1 looks in are moved into a
temporary folder, ProgramW6432 too: Windows gives a 64-bit process its
ProgramFiles from ProgramW6432 when it starts.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…p app

Restarting the AI app at the end of the install stopped every process with
"claude" in its name, path or command line, Claude Code sessions too.

- install-docker.ps1: Find-ClaudeProcess keeps only claude.exe processes
that run from a folder Claude Desktop is installed in: the Microsoft
Store package, the classic installer's folder, and the folders
Find-ClaudeExecutable looks in, now one list at the top of the script
that both use. The search of every command line goes.
- install-docker.sh: find_claude_desktop_pids gives the desktop app's
  processes (macOS: named exactly "Claude", as killall matched before;
Linux, which has no official app: community builds' claude-desktop), and
stop_claude_desktop stops only those, instead of pkill -f "claude". On
Linux the restart starts claude-desktop, not claude, which is Claude Code.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…sktop isn't running

install-docker.sh runs with set -e, and stop_claude_desktop assigns
pids=$(find_claude_desktop_pids). When Claude Desktop isn't running, pgrep
exits 1, the assignment fails, and the installer stops at the restart step
with an error: everything is installed, but "Claude has been restarted (if
possible)" and the next steps never show.

Before the stand-ins start, the test runs the stop step with a stand-in
pgrep that finds nothing, so nothing on the machine is looked at or
stopped, and the installer must go on after it. On Windows the same check
runs install-docker.ps1's Stop-ClaudeProcess with nothing found; it already
returns True there.

…ktop isn't running

With set -e, pids=$(find_claude_desktop_pids) ended the installer when
pgrep found no Claude Desktop (exit 1), after everything was installed but
before "Claude has been restarted (if possible)". The assignment now
ignores that exit code, and an empty answer stops nothing, as before.

The restart test asked the installer which processes are Claude Desktop
and failed when the answer had anything but its desktop stand-in. When the
real Claude Desktop is open on the test machine (macOS: pgrep -x "Claude";
Linux: a claude-desktop program), the answer has it too, so the test
failed with nothing wrong, and it skipped the stop step.

Now only the test's own stand-ins count in the answer. The stop step always
runs, with the installer's find step limited to the stand-ins
(find_claude_desktop_pids filtered by their PIDs; on Windows the same
around Find-ClaudeProcess), so it can't stop anything else on the machine,
not even an open Claude Desktop.

The check with no desktop app running stood in for pgrep. It now stands in
for the installer's whole find step (finding nothing, exit code 1, as pgrep
does), so it never runs a real lookup and stop step, whatever
install-docker.sh uses to find the app.

…desktop folder in their command line running

On Linux, find_claude_desktop_pids runs pgrep -f '(^|/)claude-desktop(/| |$)',
which matches the whole command line. So any program with a claude-desktop
folder in its command line is found and stopped with Claude Desktop: an
editor with ~/claude-desktop/notes.txt open, or Claude Code started from a
path under a claude-desktop folder.

The test adds both: an editor stand-in with a file in a claude-desktop
folder, and a second Claude Code stand-in started from such a folder. They
must not be found, and they must still run after the stop step. On Linux a
second desktop stand-in is an older community build, electron given the
app.asar in its claude-desktop folder, which must still be found and
stopped. Today the editor and that Claude Code stand-in are found and
stopped on Linux.

…t runs

find_claude_desktop_pids matched the whole command line with pgrep -f, so
a program with a claude-desktop folder in its arguments (an editor with a
file open there, Claude Code started from a path under such a folder) was
stopped with Claude Desktop.

It now looks only at the program being run, from ps -o args: a program
named claude-desktop, which Claude Desktop's Linux package and the
community builds made from it run (Chromium's helpers are the same
program), or electron given the app.asar in a claude-desktop folder, as
older community builds run it. Their launcher scripts run as bash and
end when the app does. The restart step is otherwise unchanged.

…till uses it

Before copying a new image's /usr into the volume dc-system, both installers
stop the containers that use the volume. They ignored a failing docker ps
(install-docker.sh: | xargs -r docker stop ... || true; install-docker.ps1:
no $LASTEXITCODE check) and a failing docker stop, and copied anyway. The
copy first deletes Desktop Commander's folder in the volume, so it could run
under a container that still used it.

The test runs each installer's update step with a stand-in docker first on
PATH, in copies of the installers that name a volume and an image of the
test's own. One stand-in container uses the volume. With a failing docker ps,
or a failing docker stop that leaves the container running, the step must
exit 1 without copying and say that nothing was changed; when Docker answers
it must still stop the container and copy. Today both installers copy in
every case and exit 0.

…ill uses it

Both installers now stop before anything in the volume dc-system changes
when Docker doesn't answer which containers use it (docker ps fails), or
when one of them still runs after docker stop: they list the containers
again after stopping them. They print the reason and "Nothing was changed.
Run the installer again." and exit 1. Before, they ignored both failures
and copied the new image into the volume anyway, deleting Desktop
Commander's folder under a container that still used it.

A normal update is unchanged: the containers are stopped and the copy runs.

…its variable's real name (failing first)

"$env:PROGRAMFILES(x86)\Claude" is read as $env:PROGRAMFILES followed by the
text (x86), so the folder Claude Desktop can be installed in came out as
C:\Program Files(x86)\Claude. The test loads install-docker.ps1 with
ProgramFiles(x86) set, in every PowerShell on the machine, and expects the
folder list to hold C:\Program Files (x86)\Claude.
…iles (x86)

install-docker.ps1 wrote the 32-bit program folder as "$env:PROGRAMFILES(x86)",
which PowerShell reads as $env:PROGRAMFILES followed by the text (x86). With the
variable's name in braces, ${env:ProgramFiles(x86)}, the restart step's list of
Claude Desktop folders and the broader search both get the real folder.
