Refresh the most used packages in the background - #645
Adds mirror.refresh, a background job that mirrors new releases of the packages clients download most, so they are cached before the first install asks for them.
mirror:
refresh:
interval: 24htop: 50# packages per ecosystem, by downloads within sincesince: 14dmax_versions: 200max_bytes: 2GB
How the open questions from the issue are answered:
Which versions: the newest release of each major line a version is cached on (0.minor below 1.0). Prereleases, yanked releases, releases within cooldown and denied ones are skipped, so a run mirrors what clients would be served. A release that leaves cooldown later is picked up by a later run.
Which files: PyPI and conda get only the kinds of files clients fetched before: wheels with the same python and ABI tags for the same OS and architecture, or the sdist, or the same conda subdir, build variant (py312, _cpython) and type.
Storage:max_versions and max_bytes cap one run. Mirrored files are evicted by max_size and retention like any other.
Debian, Alpine, RPM: included. Their cache keys are hashed, so metadata_cache now records the upstream URL (migration 022). A run fetches the InRelease, APKINDEX.tar.gz and repomd.xml files clients fetched again, reads the Packages or primary index for the repositories and architectures of the cached packages, and mirrors the newest file an index lists per package and architecture when it isn't cached but an older version is, checked against the index's SHA-256. Suites sharing a pool, such as bookworm and trixie, are refreshed each on its own that way.
Several instances: the refresh runs through the schedule loop, so it claims its run in job_runs like schedules.
Images: not part of the refresh; mirror.schedules already covers tags. Julia (cached by tree hash), Arch and FreeBSD are left out too.
Tested end to end against the real upstreams: after a client fetched lodash 4.17.20, requests 2.31.0 (one wheel), curl from bookworm with the trixie InRelease, and docker-ce-cli 28.0.4 from download.docker.com, one run mirrored lodash 4.18.1, the matching requests 2.34.2 wheel only, curl 8.14.1-2+deb13u5 and docker-ce-cli 28.1.1. The next run had nothing to do, and the new files were served from the cache.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added scheduled refreshes for frequently downloaded packages, with configurable frequency, package selection, lookback period, and per-run limits.
Refreshes can select newer eligible releases while respecting release policies and previously cached file variants. Alpine, Debian, and RPM repository indexes are also supported.
Cached package metadata now retains upstream artifact links.
Bug Fixes
Configuration now rejects refresh settings when artifact caching is disabled.
Refresh processing handles individual listing and index failures without stopping other eligible work.
Documentation
Added configuration guidance and examples for refresh settings and compatibility requirements.
mirror.refresh mirrors, for the top packages per ecosystem by recent
downloads, the newest release of each major line a version is cached on.
Releases within cooldown or on the denylist are skipped, and PyPI and conda
get only the kinds of files clients fetched before. max_versions and
max_bytes cap one run. Instances sharing a database take turns as for
schedules.
The refresh fetches Debian, Alpine and RPM indexes again from the URLs
clients fetched them from, which the hashed cache keys don't keep. Rows
cached before get their URL on the next revalidation, even on a 304.
These clients find new versions in a repository index. The refresh fetches
the InRelease, APKINDEX and repomd.xml files clients fetched again, reads
the Packages and primary indexes they point at for the repositories the
most used packages came from, and mirrors the newer file per package and
architecture, checked against the index's SHA-256 where it has one.
An index file was mirrored only when it was newer than every cached
version of the package and architecture. Debian suites share one pool, so
once curl from trixie was cached, bookworm's security updates to curl
were older than it and never mirrored. A run now mirrors the newest file
an index lists when it isn't cached and an older version is, which still
never downgrades and leaves a suite alone that only has a newer version
cached.
Tests also cover repositories listing several versions, an unreadable
index next to working ones, Architecture: all packages, scoped npm
packages, denied releases, a listing failure next to other packages, a
cancelled run and Go version lines.
Fixed in b73980e: Debian suites share one pool, so once curl from trixie was cached, bookworm's updates to curl were older than every cached version and never mirrored. A run now mirrors the newest file an index lists when it isn't cached but an older version is, so it still never downgrades. Also added tests for repositories listing several versions, an unreadable index, Architecture: all, scoped npm packages, denied releases, a cancelled run and Go version lines.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The pull request adds configurable background refresh for frequently used packages. It stores upstream metadata URLs, selects recently used packages, and mirrors eligible releases through package registries or Alpine, Debian, and RPM repository indexes. It also wires refresh into scheduled runs.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 6d971
Limit Alpine index decompression before merging: an oversized index can exhaust memory. Some compatible wheel updates may also be missed.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 6d971
Background refresh adds a security-relevant parsing boundary. Alpine indexes can expand and allocate memory without the decompressed-size protection used for Debian and RPM indexes, potentially disrupting the serving process. Exposure requires refresh to be enabled and an eligible repository index response to be controlled. Existing package-policy, integrity, and scanning controls substantially constrain other risks.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: The new Alpine refresh path decompresses APKINDEX.tar.gz and accumulates every package record without the decompressed-byte bound applied to Debian and RPM secondary indexes. A highly compressible index from an eligible configured upstream can pass the metadata response limit yet cause excessive memory allocation or processing inside the serving process. Per-line limits and artifact download caps do not contain this expansion. This exposure is introduced by refresh, rather than inherited from the existing byte-preserving Alpine serving path.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated attack prerequisite is control of an index response from a configured Alpine upstream, with refresh enabled and a matching eligible cached package and index. Ordinary client downloads can influence eligibility but do not alone provide index-content control. Resource exhaustion could affect unrelated requests handled by the same process; actual replica and tenant isolation are unknown.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — An eligible compressed Alpine archive can expand into many short package records. The parser allocates a path and appends an entry for each record before package filtering or artifact caps apply. This creates the resource-exhaustion path described in SECARCH-REFRESH-ALPINE-RESOURCE-BOUND; no executed exploit or measured production failure is asserted.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Important controls remain in place: selected package paths are checked for confinement, OS identities reuse serving parsers, release policy is applied, and final artifact fetching checks denylist policy. Debian and RPM SHA-256 values are passed to artifact verification when supplied. Alpine index checksums are explicitly not treated as package-byte digests.
observed — The strongest resource-bound counterevidence is specific to other paths: readIndex wraps decompressed secondary indexes in a 512 MiB reader, and tests cover exact-limit behavior and oversized Debian input. Alpine bypasses that reader; its one-MiB line limit bounds individual lines, not total decompression or record count.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Refresh checks cancellation between artifacts and continues past individual discovery failures. Its version and byte caps account for completed artifact work, not index parsing. The Alpine parser receives no context, so those cancellation checks do not interrupt its in-memory decompression and record-building loop.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Apply a decompressed-byte budget before Alpine tar consumption, bound retained records or filter them during streaming, and make parsing cancellation-aware. Reject oversized input rather than accepting a truncated index. These measures would address expansion and allocation separately; a byte limit alone does not tightly bound per-record memory overhead.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Every changed area traces to #632 or to a stated open question in that issue:
Config: mirror.refresh in internal/config/mirror.go, with validation, defaults, tests and the cache_artifacts: false incompatibility check.
Selection: MostUsedPackages, RecentMetadataDocuments, and the upstream_url recording that index-driven refresh requires (migration 022_add_metadata_upstream_url).
Release filtering: ReleaseAllowed and newestPerCachedLine.
File variants: PyPI and conda matching in internal/mirror/files.go, plus the fileURL, cacheFilename and digest fields on PackageVersion.
Index-driven refresh for Debian, Alpine and RPM. The issue listed these as probably out of scope at first. The PR includes them as an explicit choice, and they support the open question on index-driven ecosystems.
Scheduling: the refresh schedule in internal/mirror/schedule.go and internal/server/mirror_schedule.go, using the existing job_runs claim.
go.mod: github.com/ulikunitz/xz moves to a direct requirement. The index parsers use it for decompression.
Documentation and tests for these changes.
No change at head is unrelated to #632. The image gap is a linked-issue requirement gap, not an out-of-scope change.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #632 is the only active directly linked issue. Its coding requirements are: for each frequently used package, revalidate metadata; mirror the newest allowed version on a cached major line; for images, re-mirror the cached tags the way schedules do; cap storage per run; run once per interval across instances through job_runs.
Met at head:
Selection: Mirror.Refresh (internal/mirror/refresh.go) calls MostUsedPackages with the Since cutoff and Top limit.
Newest allowed release per cached major line (0.minor below 1.0): newestPerCachedLine, filtered by ReleaseAllowed for cooldown and denylist.
PyPI and conda variant matching: fileEcosystems and cachedVariant.
Caps: Refresh.MaxVersions and Refresh.MaxBytes.
Debian, Alpine and RPM index-driven refresh: indexRefreshItems.
Scheduling: mirrorSchedules (internal/server/mirror_schedule.go) appends the refresh schedule. The scheduler claims runs through job_runs.
Unmet requirement, images [#632]: refreshable returns false when isImageEcosystem(ecosystem) is true. Refresh therefore never re-mirrors a cached image tag selected by MostUsedPackages. mirrorSchedules maps only the configured schedule.Images PURLs. A cached tag that is absent from configuration is not re-mirrored. The PR description says images are excluded because mirror.schedules covers tags. The issue requirement covers cached tags, which that configuration does not cover. No automated test covers a cached image tag in Refresh.
Not in the issue: Julia, Arch and FreeBSD are also excluded from refresh. The PR description gives reasons. This is a deviation from the issue's general wording, but it does not change the image result.
Resolution
Add image handling to Mirror.Refresh for cached image packages returned by MostUsedPackages. Re-mirror their cached tags through the same image mirror path that mirror.schedules uses. Add an automated test in internal/mirror that seeds a cached image tag, runs Refresh, and asserts that the tag is re-mirrored. If the maintainers decide that images must stay out of scope, revise the requirement in #632 first. Then re-run this assessment against the revised requirement.

Reject index paths that escape the repository base.
Refresh builds the fetch URL from index-supplied paths without confinement. A .. segment or an absolute path lets the job fetch a file outside the repository base. The response is then cached under the repository's cache key and the package identity parsed from its basename.
For Debian and RPM, the index digest limits the cached bytes to the index's declared content. Alpine sets no digest, so its body is not checked. The main risk is path confinement and cache identity, not a bypass of the upstream trust boundary.
A single check in the candidate loop covers all three ecosystems. Alpine raw P: and V: values also form f.Path, so they are covered too.

Reject negative mirror.refresh.max_bytes values during validation.
MirrorRefresh.validate() stores max_bytes without a sign check. ParseSize accepts a leading minus sign, so a negative value such as "-1GB" passes validation. The scheduled refresh then receives a negative MaxBytes. The byte stop in internal/mirror/refresh.go checks MaxBytes > 0, so the run never stops on bytes. The configured cap is silently disabled. top and max_versions already reject negative values in the same function.

Thanks, this fits well and the OS index side is careful work. Two things before it can go in.
File kinds are matched too strictly for PyPI and conda (internal/mirror/files.go). When no file of the new version matches a cached kind, mirrorFiles records "no file matches the kinds of files cached of earlier versions" as a failure, and some of the most used packages hit that on every run:
Wheels are matched on the full platform tag. numpy 2.2.6 ships cp312-cp312-manylinux_2_17_x86_64.manylinux2014_x86_64, 2.3.0 ships cp312-cp312-manylinux_2_28_x86_64, so a Linux client with 2.2.6 cached never gets 2.3.x. macOS minimum version bumps (macosx_10_13 to macosx_11_0 and so on) do the same.
condaBuildHash is anchored at the end of the build string, so conda-forge's python builds such as python-3.12.16-h5f976f7_0_cpython.conda keep the hash in the variant and no later version matches.
Please strip h[0-9a-f]{7}_\d+ wherever it occurs in a conda build string and keep the suffix (_cpython, _debug_cpython), and match wheels on python and ABI tags plus the platform's OS and architecture, ignoring the glibc or macOS minimum version. Tests for both cases above, please.
readIndex has no size limit (internal/mirror/refresh_index.go). It decompresses and parses Packages.xz and primary.xml.zst in full, while the metadata path goes through ReadMetadataSized. A broken or hostile upstream, or a compression bomb, can grow the parsed list until the proxy runs out of memory. Wrap the decompressed reader in a byte limit that fails the index once exceeded (a few hundred MB covers Debian main and Fedora primary), with a test.
File kinds (f8c5fa9): wheels match on python and ABI tags plus OS and architecture, so manylinux_2_17_x86_64.manylinux2014_x86_64 and manylinux_2_28_x86_64 are the same kind, and so are macosx_10_13_x86_64 and macosx_11_0_x86_64. musllinux and arm64 stay apart. conda drops h[0-9a-f]{7}_\d+ wherever it is, keeping _cpython and _debug_cpython. Tests cover numpy 2.2.6 → 2.3.0 for Linux and macOS, and conda-forge's python builds.
Index size (34524a4): readIndex fails an index that decompresses to more than 512 MiB, with a test for an oversized one and one for exactly the limit.

Limit Alpine APKINDEX output after decompression.
The Alpine closure bypasses the 512 MiB limit used by readIndex. The metadata limit only bounds the compressed body at 100 MiB. Apply indexLimitReader to the gzip output and pass the actual indexURL from the closure.

Limit decompressed APKINDEX data using the existing indexLimitReader in
parseAPKIndex, passing the actual indexURL from the Alpine files closure so
limit errors retain the URL context. Update parseAPKIndex’s callers, including
the relevant test, to provide the URL while preserving the existing parsing
behavior.

alternatives and a match occurs when the wheels share any platform tag. Preserve
the existing Python and ABI checks, and adjust the `wheelPlatform`/`selects`
matching flow without treating the joined tags as a single key.

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Linked Issues check:
Add image handling to `Mirror.Refresh` for cached image packages returned by
`MostUsedPackages`. Re-mirror their cached tags through the same image mirror
path that `mirror.schedules` uses. Add an automated test in internal/mirror that
seeds a cached image tag, runs `Refresh`, and asserts that the tag is
re-mirrored. If the maintainers decide that images must stay out of scope,
revise the requirement in #632 first. Then re-run this assessment against the
revised requirement.
- Docstring Coverage:
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage
threshold.

Closes #632.
Adds
mirror.refresh, a background job that mirrors new releases of the packages clients download most, so they are cached before the first install asks for them. How the open questions from the issue are answered:
0.minorbelow 1.0). Prereleases, yanked releases, releases within cooldown and denied ones are skipped, so a run mirrors what clients would be served. A release that leaves cooldown later is picked up by a later run.py312,_cpython) and type.max_versionsandmax_bytescap one run. Mirrored files are evicted bymax_sizeand retention like any other.metadata_cachenow records the upstream URL (migration 022). A run fetches theInRelease,APKINDEX.tar.gzandrepomd.xmlfiles clients fetched again, reads thePackagesor primary index for the repositories and architectures of the cached packages, and mirrors the newest file an index lists per package and architecture when it isn't cached but an older version is, checked against the index's SHA-256. Suites sharing a pool, such as bookworm and trixie, are refreshed each on its own that way.job_runslike schedules.mirror.schedulesalready covers tags. Julia (cached by tree hash), Arch and FreeBSD are left out too.Tested end to end against the real upstreams: after a client fetched lodash 4.17.20, requests 2.31.0 (one wheel), curl from bookworm with the trixie
InRelease, and docker-ce-cli 28.0.4 from download.docker.com, one run mirrored lodash 4.18.1, the matching requests 2.34.2 wheel only, curl 8.14.1-2+deb13u5 and docker-ce-cli 28.1.1. The next run had nothing to do, and the new files were served from the cache.Summary by CodeRabbit
