Summary

  • Replace the Zod 3 JSON Schema converter with Zod 4's native input-mode converter.
  • Publish caller-facing schemas for tools whose runtime validation uses preprocessing or refinements (write_pdf, edit_block, and kill_process) while retaining those runtime checks.
  • Keep unsupported-parameter warnings working with Zod 4, and document the write_pdf JSON-array string and edit_block either-or input contracts.
  • Compare the complete caller-facing schema map with the MCP tools/list output and add a regression for unsupported-parameter warnings.
  • Add a focused workflow for the schema and warning regressions; disable checkout credential persistence.

Validation

  • npm ci --ignore-scripts --no-audit --no-fund completed.
  • npm run build passed.
  • node test/test-mcp-tool-input-schemas.js passed, including a live MCP tools/list request.
  • node test/integration/read-file-unknown-params.js passed all four cases, including the view_range warning.
  • GitHub Actions validation for head ba9b29e2dfa47bb42b730add03db0b2477e7c500 is running on the MFJG-dev fork.

This PR is ready for upstream maintainer review.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Tool input schemas now expose expected fields and required properties, while runtime validation continues to enforce input constraints.
  • Tests
    • Added checks for schema conversion, validation behavior, and the input schemas published by the server.
    • Automated schema tests now run on pull requests to the main branch and can also be started manually.
  • Chores
    • Updated schema handling for compatibility with the current validation format.

Walkthrough

The PR upgrades Zod, replaces the legacy JSON Schema converter with Zod 4 input-mode conversion, and updates the MCP server’s advertised tool schemas. It adds tests for schema conversion, runtime validation, and the schemas returned by the MCP tool listing, plus a GitHub Actions workflow to run them.

Changes: MCP tool input schemas

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define input schemas and conversion
package.json, src/tools/schemas.ts, src/utils/unsupportedParams.ts, test/test-mcp-tool-input-schemas.js
The project upgrades Zod and removes zod-to-json-schema. Caller-facing schemas and toMcpInputSchema provide draft-07 JSON Schema conversion in input mode. Runtime validation remains in place for PDF, edit-block, and kill-process inputs. The unsupported-parameter helper uses Zod 4 schema classes. Tests check conversion and selected runtime constraints.
Publish schemas and verify MCP tool listing
src/server.ts, test/test-mcp-tool-input-schemas.js, .github/workflows/test-tool-schemas.yml
The server uses the new converter to advertise tool input schemas. PDF writing, block editing, and process termination use their caller-facing schemas. Tests check the schemas returned by the MCP tool listing, and a workflow runs the tests on pull requests to main and manual dispatch.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: MCP tools now publish JSON Schema generated by Zod 4's native converter instead of the Zod 3 converter. The changeset matches this. server.ts replaces zodToJsonSchema with toMcpInputSchema, package.json moves zod to v4 and drops zod-to-json-schema, and schemas.ts adds the caller-facing input schemas and conversion function. The title is concise, specific, and free of noise.

🟡 Changes recommended

The Zod 4 upgrade breaks unsupported-parameter detection because the helper still checks Zod 3 internals, causing arguments such as view_range to be silently ignored without a corrective warning.

Fixed in ba9b29e: unsupported-parameter detection now reads Zod 4 object shapes through its public APIs. Added a regression for view_range and ran the read_file integration test locally and in the fork workflow.

Follow-up Comments

Minor follow-up Document the editblock either-or requirement in the published schema.

185-189: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Document the edit_block either-or requirement in the published schema.

Clients that follow the published edit_block schema can send only file_path. handleEditBlock then rejects that request, because EditBlockArgsSchema requires old_string + new_string or range + content. Describe this requirement in the published schema or the tool description. This gap also exists on the base branch, so a follow-up is sufficient.

Review comment at @src/tools/schemas.ts around lines 185 - 189:
Document the edit_block requirement in the published schema or tool description:
callers must provide either old_string and new_string together, or range and
content together. Update EditBlockInputArgsSchema or the corresponding tool
description so clients see this requirement before calling handleEditBlock;
preserve the existing runtime validation in EditBlockArgsSchema.
Minor follow-up Document the JSON-array string case in writepdf content or change its handling.

118-121: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Document the JSON-array string case in write_pdf content or change its handling.

WritePdfInputArgsSchema publishes content as a string or an array of operations. The runtime WritePdfArgsSchema parses any string that starts with [ as JSON. Markdown content such as [1,2] parses to an array that fails PdfOperationSchema, so the handler returns an error. Falling back to the raw string would also change error handling for malformed operation arrays, so choose that behavior explicitly.

Review comment at @src/tools/schemas.ts around lines 118 - 121:
Clarify the `content` contract exposed by `WritePdfInputArgsSchema` and enforced
by `WritePdfArgsSchema`: explicitly choose whether strings beginning with `[`
are interpreted as JSON operation arrays or may remain Markdown, and make the
published schema documentation or runtime handling consistent with that choice.
Preserve the intended error behavior for malformed operation arrays rather than
treating them as raw Markdown by default.
Minor follow-up Check map entries against the tools/list output.

305-311: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Check map entries against the tools/list output.

The server never reads toolMcpInputSchemas. The test only converts each map entry and does not compare map keys or schemas with the listed tools. Removing a listed tool outside EXPECTED_REQUIRED (for example, read_multiple_files) still passes. Add a membership and schema equality check. Handle track_ui_event as an explicit exception, because the map includes it and tools/list does not return it.

Review comment at @src/tools/schemas.ts around lines 305 - 311:
Update the test that converts entries from toolMcpInputSchemas to compare its
keys and schemas with the tools/list output, so missing listed tools are
detected even when they are not in EXPECTED_REQUIRED. Exclude track_ui_event as
an explicit exception because it is present in the map but absent from
tools/list.
