Builds on #5286.

What and why

Preferences > User Interface > Open Documents As Tabs was stored but did nothing, so documents always opened under tabs. The help page describes the checked default: "When you create or open documents, they are arranged in tabs in a single document window" (Workspace overview). Part of #394.

  • With the box cleared, each document opened or created afterwards opens in a floating window of its own, at the next cascade place, as Window > Arrange > Float in Window (Window: Float in Window, Float All in Windows and Cascade float documents #5278) floats it. It becomes the current document.
  • Documents already open stay where they are when the box changes, and documents open when the app starts keep their tabs. Checking the box again leaves floating documents in their windows. These are VectorCraft's own choices.
  • The engine records the preference on each document as it opens (DocState::opened_as_tab), so a command.batch that closes and opens documents, or changes the preference between opening them, places each one as the preference was when it opened.
  • docs/gaps.md, docs/target-app-parity.md and docs/ui-parity.md no longer list the option as stored only. It adds no new strings.

How it was tested

New tests in crates/ui-egui/src/doc_windows/tests.rs, each shown to fail without its change: with_open_documents_as_tabs_cleared_new_documents_open_in_floating_windows, checking_open_documents_as_tabs_again_leaves_floating_documents_where_they_are, documents_open_when_the_app_starts_keep_their_tabs, a_document_created_in_a_batch_that_closes_another_still_floats and each_document_in_a_batch_follows_the_preference_when_it_opened.

On Windows 11 (x86-64) with rustc 1.99.0, on #5286's head fbaca70f (main at 4ee0ef23):

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check
  • cargo clippy -p vectorcraft-engine -p vectorcraft-ui-egui --all-targets -- -D warnings
  • cargo check --workspace --tests
  • cargo test -p vectorcraft-ui-egui: 2,900 passed (lib), 2 passed (install_fonts)
  • cargo test -p vectorcraft-engine: 4,374 passed, 2 ignored
  • cargo xtask brands, layers, assets and wasm
  • cargo xtask ci runs in this pull request's CI.

cargo xtask ci passed in this pull request's CI run on 326951ab70: https://github.com/storytold/vectorcraft/actions/runs/41566061854/job/125687771655

Checklist

  • cargo xtask ci passes (fmt, clippy, tests, assets, brands, layers, wasm).
  • No panics in shipped code: no unwrap(), expect(), panic!, unreachable!, todo! or
unimplemented! outside tests, and no unchecked indexing on data from files, parameters or
messages. Errors are returned as Result and shown to the user
    (why and how).
  • Clean-room: nothing copied from Adobe products or GPL/AGPL code (AGENTS.md).
  • Every new asset has a row in ASSETS.md.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Documents can now be opened in floating windows, with a preference to choose whether new documents open as tabs or separate windows.
    • Drag tabs out to create floating windows, or drag windows back into the tab strip.
    • Use the Arrange menu to float one or all documents, cascade windows, tile documents, or consolidate windows.
    • Floating windows support document fitting, focus, and presentation mode.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds floating document windows and controls for moving documents between floating windows and tabs. Newly opened documents follow the Open Documents As Tabs preference. The UI adds arrangement commands, floating-window rendering, and related inspection and documentation updates.

Changes: Floating Document Windows

Layer / File(s) Summary
Document opening policy and window state
crates/engine/src/doc_state.rs, crates/engine/src/session/documents.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/app/view.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/caches.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/state.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/doc_windows.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/app.rs
Document state records whether it opened as a tab. The UI tracks existing and newly opened documents in window state.
Floating-window lifecycle and canvas layout
crates/ui-egui/src/app.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/canvas*, crates/ui-egui/src/doc_windows.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/doc_windows/tests.rs
Floating windows handle placement, rendering, focus, fitting, closing, and docking. Tiling and canvas panes account for which documents are docked. Tests cover window behavior, layout, and presentation mode.
Tab interactions and arrangement commands
crates/ui-egui/src/chrome*, crates/ui-egui/src/menus/*, crates/ui-egui/src/control.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/panel_docking.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/canvas/panes/tests.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/doc_windows/tests.rs, docs/*
Tabs can be dragged into floating windows, and windows can be dragged back to the tab strip. Arrangement commands manage floating, cascading, tiling, and consolidation. Inspection output, tests, and documentation cover these changes.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main behavior change: with Open Documents As Tabs cleared, newly opened documents open in windows. The changeset adds the preference-based placement in doc_windows, the DocState::opened_as_tab flag, and tests for that behavior. The title is specific and accurate, and it is short enough to scan in history.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template: it has What and why, How it was tested, and a completed Checklist. It explains the behaviour change (Open Documents As Tabs cleared opens new documents in floating windows), lists the new tests by name, and gives the commands and platform used. One gap: the checklist marks "cargo xtask ci" as passing, but the description also says the CI run is still in progress, so that item is not fully verified. The PR also mentions the test-run lines and a CI link, which is useful evidence.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 78.72% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 47 functions across 20 files. (4 skipped: 4 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

- **Window › Arrange › Float in Window, Float All in Windows and Cascade (G7):** documents float in windows of their own, out of the tab strip ([public source](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/customizing-workspace.html): "drag the window's tab out of the group"). Float in Window (`window.arrange.floatInWindow`) floats the current document, Float All in Windows (`window.arrange.floatAllInWindows`) every tabbed one, and Cascade (`window.arrange.cascade`) floats every document and stacks the windows from the upper left to the lower right ([public source](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/viewing-artwork.html): "Cascade displays windows stacked and descending from the upper-left to the lower-right of the screen"). On the desktop each window is an OS window; on the web and on Wayland it is a window inside the app's window. The window of the current document holds the canvas; the others draw their documents as Tile's panes do, and a press in one makes its document the current one. Closing a window closes its document, asking to save unsaved changes. Consolidate All Windows brings every document back under the tabs, and Tile brings them back into its grid. The cascade's 30 pt step, the windows' size and when the items are enabled (Cascade with two documents or more, Float in Window for a tabbed current document, Float All in Windows while a document is tabbed, Consolidate All Windows while documents are tiled or floating) are VectorCraft's own. Tests: `crates/ui-egui/src/doc_windows/tests.rs`.
- **Dragging a document tab out and a document window back (G7):** a document tab dragged more than 24 pt above or below the tab strip floats its document in a window under the pointer, and a document window dragged onto the tab strip goes back under the tabs ([public source](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/customizing-workspace.html): "To undock (float or untab) a Document window from a group of windows, drag the window’s tab out of the group. To dock a Document window to a separate group of Document windows, drag the window into the group."). A window inside the app's window is dragged by its title bar; an OS window by the document's tab at its top, and the window follows the pointer. The 24 pt distance and the tab at the top of an OS window are VectorCraft's own. Tests: `crates/ui-egui/src/doc_windows/tests.rs`.
- **Preferences › User Interface › Open Documents As Tabs (G7, #394):** checked by default, documents open under tabs in one document window ([public source](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/get-started/learn-the-basics/workspace-overview.html): "When you create or open documents, they are arranged in tabs in a single document window"). With the box cleared, each document opened or created afterwards opens in a floating window of its own, at the next cascade place, as Float in Window floats it; documents already open stay where they are, and checking the box again leaves floating documents in their windows. Tests: `crates/ui-egui/src/doc_windows/tests.rs`.

Minor · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Add a revision-history row for this feature change.

This PR adds three G7 evidence bullets: Float in Window and Cascade, tab tear-off and docking, and Open Documents As Tabs. It also changes the Preferences audit on Line 639 and Line 641. The "Feature revisions" table still ends at the 2026-11-02 .ai entry, and this change has no row in it. The repository instructions require each touched progress doc to update its revision history and status line in the same PR. Add a dated minor row that summarizes the change and states that scores are unchanged. Also confirm that the status lines in docs/gaps.md and docs/ui-parity.md were updated.

…ndows

Preferences > User Interface > Open Documents As Tabs was stored but did
nothing. With the box cleared, each document opened or created afterwards
opens in a floating window of its own, at the next cascade place, as
Window > Arrange > Float in Window floats it. Documents already open, and
documents open when the app starts, keep their tabs; checking the box
again leaves floating documents in their windows.

The engine records the preference on each document as it opens
(DocState::opened_as_tab), and the UI finds new documents by uid, so a
command batch that closes and opens documents, or changes the preference
between opening them, places each one as the preference was when it
opened.
