Actions: New Action asks for the action's name, set, function key and color - #5270
The Actions panel's New Action dialog accepts a name, action set, function key, and color. Record creates the action and records its steps. Cancel adds nothing. Action Options edits the selected action's name, key, and color.
Action function keys take priority over command shortcuts and preserve both assignments. Command-shortcut edits and preference or action-set loading preserve action keys. Shared-key repeats do not run the command or replay the action. Duplicate action keys play the first action in panel order. Reserved keys remain unavailable on their platform, including F1, Ctrl+F4, and Ctrl+F6 on Windows.
The commands are ui.action.new {set, name, key?, cmd?, shift?, color?}, ui.action.options {set, action, name?, key?, cmd?, shift?, color?}, ui.action.play {action, set?}, and ui.action.stop {}. Action keys and colors are stored in preferences and version 1 .vcactions files. Color is stored for Button Mode; the panel does not display it yet.
No panics in shipped code: no unwrap(), expect(), panic!, unreachable!, todo! or unimplemented! outside tests, and no unchecked indexing on data from files, parameters or
messages. Errors are returned as Result and shown to the user
(why and how).
Clean-room: nothing copied from Adobe products or GPL/AGPL code (AGENTS.md).
Every new asset has a row in ASSETS.md.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Create actions with a name, action set, function key, and color, and begin recording steps immediately.
Play actions from the Actions panel or with assigned F1–F15 keys, optionally combined with Ctrl/Command or Shift. Playback is undoable.
Update an action’s name, function key, and color in its options, or stop recording while retaining recorded steps.
Resolve shortcut conflicts by replacing an existing assignment; unavailable or conflicting keys are cleared when loading action sets.
Documentation
Expanded Actions guidance with details on creating, recording, configuring, and playing actions.
The Actions panel adds action creation and recording, editing of names and key and color settings, and playback by name or function key. Action files now persist key and color settings. Function-key conflicts are checked during assignment and loading.

Summary
Action data and command behavior crates/ui-egui/src/panels/actions.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/state.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/panels/pathfinder.rs
Actions now have unique runtime IDs and optional function keys and colors. Commands create, update, play, and stop actions. Recording can target a created action by ID. Copies receive new IDs and do not retain keys. Tests cover recording, playback, conflicts, and persistence.
The New Action and Action Options dialogs collect action settings and call their commands. The Actions panel adds creation entry points. Command and parity documentation describes these operations.
Shortcut handling and action persistence crates/ui-egui/src/panels/actions/files.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/shortcuts.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/shortcut_editor.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/app.rs
Function-key presses play matching actions before shortcut dispatch. Action files save and load keys and colors, with conflicting or unavailable keys cleared.

storytold/vectorcraft#2070: The change adds per-action function keys, conflict handling, and playback by key, including while the Type tool edits text.
storytold/vectorcraft#1629: Action Options now supports editing action settings while preserving recorded steps, but this change does not add deletion.
storytold/vectorcraft#5324: The change defines how action function keys interact with command shortcuts, but does not add the requested F2 rename command.
The change adds action creation, function-key playback and key/color persistence. Two documentation rows still describe conflict rules that no longer ship, and one row still quotes Adobe help text. Neither affects runtime behavior, but both should be corrected before or soon after merge.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the New Action dialog and its four fields (name, set, function key, color). The changeset adds that dialog, and the title covers the main user-facing change. It does not mention the other parts of the PR, such as the ui.action commands, shortcut handling, and file persistence, but the title does not need to cover every detail.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers what the change does, the new dialog fields, the key priority rules, the command syntax, and storage of keys and colors. It also reports the validation run and checks the template checklist items. The template's "How it was tested" section is only partly filled. It gives test counts and CI status, but it does not describe the specific tests added or how the behavior was checked (CLI, MCP, or screenshots). The description also has no explicit issue link under "What and why", though the PR objectives reference PR #5270. The author should add a short note on which tests cover the dialog, recording, and shortcut behavior, and should state whether MCP or CLI paths were checked.

# VectorCraft — instructions for agents
## Roadmap and progress docs
When a task lands, update in the same PR: the area row in `docs/target-app-parity.md` (score, missing items, hours) and its evidence list, the gap entry in `docs/gaps.md` if it closed or shrank, the checklist it belongs to, the milestone row in `docs/roadmap.md`, and the ROADMAP's tables and progress log when a headline number moves. Update each touched doc's status line and revision history.
de8e708a5: the two Actions panel lines in docs/target-app-parity.md describe the help pages in their own words; links and command ids are unchanged.
c00211646: Import… in Keyboard Shortcuts no longer takes an action's function key when the imported set gives that key to a command. OK releases it, and Cancel leaves it with the action.
4255179da: off macOS, Replace now takes a command's Ctrl shortcut when an action gets the same key with Cmd.
560f741f3: a command that runs on a function key pressed twice holds that key, and the web build keeps an action's Ctrl or Cmd function key from the browser.
Each fix has a test that fails without it. The branch still merges cleanly with main at 11862f6119.
Thanks @dotCooCoo! The New Action dialog and the function-key rules look right. The key-conflict part goes against the documentation, though: when an action is given a shortcut a command already uses, the shortcut plays the action instead of the command. This PR refuses a taken key until Replace is ticked, deletes the command's shortcut and switches the set to Custom, takes the key back from the action when a command gets it later, and drops keys from actions loaded from files or prefs. Since actions already play before commands, could you remove those four rules (the Replace option and the key stripping)? Then it can land.
Action function keys now preserve command bindings and take priority over them. The Replace option and key stripping on preference or action-set load have been removed. Command-shortcut edits also preserve action keys. Shared-key repeats are consumed without replaying the action, and action keys work while the Type tool edits text after IME ownership checks.
Validation covered 2,963 UI tests, strict UI clippy, formatting, and workspace/tests compilation. The branch includes current main and merges cleanly.
- Actions panel menu: Save Actions… writes the current action set with all its actions to a file, and Load Actions… adds the set from such a file to the panel ([Manage a set of actions](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/automate-visualize-data/automate-actions/manage-a-set-of-actions.html): "Select Save Actions from the Actions panel menu", "You can save only the entire contents of a set", "Select Load Actions from the Actions panel menu"; `ui.actionSet.save`, `ui.actionSet.load`). The file is VectorCraft's own action set file (`.vcactions`); a loaded set named like one in the panel gets the next free number.
- Actions panel: the panel menu's Action Options… renames the selected action and keeps its steps ([Actions panel overview](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/automate-visualize-data/automate-actions/actions-panel-overview.html): "Opens a dialog to rename or assign function keys/colors to the action"; `ui.action.rename`). The dialog has the name only; the function key and color are not there yet.
- Actions panel: the panel menu's Action Options… renames the selected action and keeps its steps ([Actions panel overview](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/automate-visualize-data/automate-actions/actions-panel-overview.html): the menu item opens a dialog that renames the action or gives it a function key and color; `ui.action.options`). It also sets the action's function key and color.
- Actions panel: Create New Action (bottom bar) and the panel menu's New Action… ask for the new action's name, set, function key and color, and Record adds the action and starts recording into it ([Create new actions](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/automate-visualize-data/automate-actions/record-actions.html): the New Action dialog takes the action's name and the set it goes in; `ui.action.new`, `ui.action.play`). The function key (F1 to F15, with Ctrl or Command and Shift) plays the action. VectorCraft's own rules, which the page does not cover: a key another action or a command has is refused until Replace is ticked, which takes it from them; a shortcut given to a command later takes the key from the action; a copied action, and a loaded action whose key is taken, have no key; New Action does not open while an action is recording. The color is kept with the action for Button Mode, which VectorCraft does not have yet.

Remove the Replace and key-stripping rules from the evidence entry.
Line 562 describes rules that this PR removed:
"a key another action or a command has is refused until Replace is ticked, which takes it from them"
"a shortcut given to a command later takes the key from the action"
"a loaded action whose key is taken" has no key
The code works differently:
new_action and action_options reject only invalid or reserved keys. They do not check for a taken key.
The tests shortcut_precedence_command_edits_retain_action_keys and shortcut_precedence_preferences_and_files_retain_action_keys confirm that a command shortcut edit or a load keeps the action key.
new_action_shows_its_fields asserts that no "Replace" control exists.
This is the authoritative parity document, so its evidence list must describe what ships.
Proposed wording
-VectorCraft's own rules, which the page does not cover: a key another action or a command has is refused until Replace is ticked, which takes it from them; a shortcut given to a command later takes the key from the action; a copied action, and a loaded action whose key is taken, have no key; New Action does not open while an action is recording.+VectorCraft's own rules, which the page does not cover: an action's function key takes priority over a command with the same shortcut, and the command keeps its binding; when several actions share a key, the first in panel order plays; editing command shortcuts and loading preferences or action set files keep action keys; a copied action has no key; a key reserved on the platform does not play; New Action does not open while an action is recording.
As per coding guidelines: "When a task lands, update in the same PR: the area row in docs/target-app-parity.md (score, missing items, hours) and its evidence list".

Remove the conflict rules from the Create New Action row.
The Notes column says "a taken key needs Replace, and a shortcut given to a command later takes the key from the action." This PR removed both rules:
Action keys take priority over command shortcuts.
Command shortcut edits keep action keys.
The dialog has no Replace control.

Merged, thanks @dotCooCoo, and for reworking the key rules. Checked live: with F15 on Duplicate, giving it to Duplicate and Offset makes F15 play the action while the command keeps its binding. Your last fixes were in the merge commit, so I landed the PR as one squashed commit, then added a small docs commit after it: three sentences (target-app-parity, ui-parity, and load_set's doc comment) still described Replace and keys dropped on load.

The commands are
ui.action.new {set, name, key?, cmd?, shift?, color?},ui.action.options {set, action, name?, key?, cmd?, shift?, color?},ui.action.play {action, set?}, andui.action.stop {}.
