fix: _Installation update fails when clearing deviceToken - #10454
{ deviceToken: null } succeeds but stores null. The push pipeline selects recipients with deviceToken: { $exists: true }, which matches a stored null, so the installation stays push-addressable and its empty token is handed to the push adapter.
Approach
handleInstallation runs before the write step applies __op operators, so it has to recognize a clear itself.
Both clearing forms are detected after that check, and the null form is rewritten to { __op: 'Delete' }, so the field is removed from the row rather than stored as null.
A separate deviceTokenForLookup value (undefined when clearing) is used everywhere the token identifies or matches rows: the "must specify ID" guard, the 64-character iOS lowercasing, the "no critical change" early return, the $or lookup, the match loop, the 136 "deviceToken may not be changed" check, and both duplicate-token cleanup queries. The operator object never reaches a database query.

🚀 Thanks for opening this pull request! We appreciate your effort in improving the project. Please let us know once your pull request is ready for review.
Tip
Keep pull requests small. Large PRs will be rejected. Break complex features into smaller, incremental PRs.
Use Test Driven Development. Write failing tests before implementing functionality. Ensure tests pass.
Group code into logical blocks. Add a short comment before each block to explain its purpose.
We offer conceptual guidance. Coding is up to you. PRs must be merge-ready for human review.
Our review focuses on concept, not quality. PRs with code issues will be rejected. Use an AI agent.
Human review time is precious. Avoid review ping-pong. Inspect and test your AI-generated code.
Note
Please respond to review comments from AI agents just like you would to comments from a human reviewer. Let the reviewer resolve their own comments, unless they have reviewed and accepted your commit, or agreed with your explanation for why the feedback was incorrect.
Caution
Pull requests must be written using an AI agent with human supervision. Pull requests written entirely by a human will likely be rejected, because of lower code quality, higher review effort and the higher risk of introducing bugs. Please note that AI review comments on this pull request alone do not satisfy this requirement. Our CI and AI review are safeguards, not development tools. If many issues are flagged, rethink your development approach. Invest more effort in planning and design rather than using review cycles to fix low-quality code.
This PR updates installation writes to clear deviceToken when a request sets it to null or uses a Delete operation. Cleared tokens are excluded from installation lookup and duplicate-token cleanup. Tests cover installation identity, push-recipient filtering, and updates to other fields.
Changes: Installation device-token clearing
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Token clearing and lookup integration src/RestWrite.js
handleInstallation normalizes null and Delete values and uses the lookup token for validation, matching, and duplicate cleanup.
Token clearing test coverage spec/ParseInstallation.spec.js
Tests cover both clearing forms, installation ID preservation, push-recipient filtering, and simultaneous updates to deviceType and appVersion.
The change is mergeable; no actionable correctness or availability risk was identified.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 38bde
The change is bounded to clearing installation device tokens. Existing write permissions remain enforced, and clearing does not invoke duplicate-token cleanup. No introduced security bypass was substantiated, but concurrent updates and failure-recovery behavior were not validated.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The newly successful operation affects installations selected within the existing application write context and their subsequent push eligibility. It does not add a route, identity source, privileged cleanup operation, or cross-service dependency. Permissive installation ACLs can still allow client writes; identification is not itself proof of ownership.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The inspected clear-input path does not substantiate query injection or an authorization bypass introduced by this PR. The accepted operation object is excluded from lookup and privileged deduplication, while the final mutation remains permission-constrained. This conclusion is limited to the inspected change, not a complete security assessment of installation handling.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Non-master writes retain user and role ACL context. After installation matching, class-level permissions are checked, and the database controller adds pointer permissions and row-level write ACL constraints before selecting the storage update. Master and maintenance exemptions remain explicit existing behavior.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — For a clear-only request, failure before the primary write cannot strand another installation through duplicate-token cleanup, because that cleanup is not reached. Repeated deletion is idempotent for deviceToken state, though request metadata and triggers may still change. Concurrent re-registration and post-write interruption retain the existing pipeline's ordering and recovery limitations; no new reservation or compensation mechanism is introduced.

The description includes the Issue, Approach, and Tasks sections. It explains the failure modes, implementation, and test coverage. The standard introductory ## Pull Request section and boilerplate links are omitted, but the core required information is present.
Full details: Security Check
Explanation
No security vulnerability is introduced. The changed code accepts deviceToken: { __op: 'Delete' } only as a deletion, converts null to the same deletion, and uses undefined for all device-token lookup and deduplication paths. Therefore the operator object cannot become a database query constraint. The existing String type guard remains in place for other values, and normal write permission and schema validation still run. This also preserves the repository regression coverage for GHSA-cc6h-c8m4-hgrx, the _Installation NoSQL-injection advisory.
Full details: Engage In Review Feedback
Explanation
The standing Major finding remains unresolved. The reviewed range contains three expect(results[0].deviceToken).toBeUndefined() assertions at spec/ParseInstallation.spec.js:572, :606, and :676. The later commit changed the null-case assertion from accepting null (deviceToken == null) to requiring undefined; it did not implement the feedback. The supplied thread is marked resolved, but no reviewer agreement to retract the finding is recorded. The current review's zero findings does not establish prior engagement.
Resolution
Engage with the Major review finding in its discussion. Then either commit changes to all three assertions that accept both null and undefined, or explain why the assertions are correct and obtain the reviewer's agreement to retract the finding.

Pull request overview
This PR updates _Installation handling so clearing deviceToken during an update no longer feeds a delete/null payload into the installation lookup path, which was causing Mongo query transformation failures.
Changes:
Adds a deviceTokenForLookup path in RestWrite.handleInstallation to treat null and { __op: 'Delete' } as non-identifying values during installation matching.
Updates installation matching, validation, and dedup lookup branches to use the derived lookup token instead of the raw request payload.
Adds regression tests covering deviceToken clearing via delete op, via null, and while updating another field.

handleInstallation runs before Parse __op operators are processed, so
when a client cleared deviceToken via { __op: 'Delete' } or null, the
operator object was being pushed into the Mongo $or lookup query and
rejected by transformQueryKeyValue with "You cannot use [object Object]
as a query parameter" (Parse error 107).
Detect the clearing intent and route the identification/lookup paths
through deviceTokenForLookup (undefined when clearing) while leaving
this.data.deviceToken untouched so the field is still cleared on write.
Adds regression specs covering both clearing shapes and the case where
deviceToken is cleared alongside another field update.
