fix: sanitize unsafe video url for lightbox - #3773
The reported security issue occurs in specifically GLightbox’s video handling, where it builds markup from the supplied URL.
This PR addresses that path in Stackable by validating video URLs and escaping accepted URLs before passing them to GLightbox.
Tested with the provided exploit instructions.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved lightbox handling of video links by rejecting malformed, unsafe, or credential-bearing URLs while continuing to support valid YouTube, Vimeo, and direct video links.
Prevented markup-like content in video URLs from creating unintended page elements.
Kept image and iframe link behavior unchanged while applying video URL validation.
The change adds shared video URL detection and validation. The frontend lightbox uses these functions to filter and sanitize video URLs. Unit and browser tests cover URL cases and lightbox behavior.
Changes: Lightbox URL handling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Video URL detection and validation src/lightbox/video-url.js, src/lightbox/__test__/video-url.test.js
Adds detection for supported video-provider hosts and direct video file extensions. URL validation accepts HTTP and HTTPS URLs without credentials. Tests cover accepted, rejected, unusual, and malformed URL forms.
Lightbox validation and sanitization src/lightbox/frontend-image-lightbox.js, e2e/tests/frontend-interactive.spec.ts
The lightbox skips invalid video candidates and sanitizes video URLs when storing them. The browser test checks that an entity-encoded markup-like URL does not create an injected element.
A rejected video link can remain executable when clicked. Neutralize rejected javascript: links before merging, or explicitly accept this bounded risk.

Add a browser test for an accepted YouTube video in the lightbox.
The video escaping added to src/lightbox/frontend-image-lightbox.js has no browser coverage on its accepted path. The rejection test opens no video. The "Video Popup opens a dialog" test uses stackable/video-popup, which does not call GLightbox.
The test below opens a YouTube link with several query parameters. It asserts the data-plyr-embed-id attribute that GLightbox writes. It does not assert the iframe src, because Plyr creates that value and the test mocks Plyr.

Add browser coverage in the frontend interactive tests for an accepted YouTube
video opened through the GLightbox path, rather than the separate Video Popup
block. Build a linked image with a YouTube URL containing multiple query
parameters, mock Plyr as needed, then assert GLightbox preserves the full URL in
the data-plyr-embed-id attribute; do not assert the iframe src.

Stop rejected javascript: candidates from staying clickable.
When isValidVideoUrl rejects a candidate, the function returns before addClickHandler runs. The anchor keeps its original href. A javascript: URL that matches detectIfVideo can then run its script on click. Before this change, the lightbox click handler called preventDefault() on that anchor. Neutralize rejected javascript: hrefs so the click does not navigate.

In the malformed-video rejection path guarded by detectIfVideo and
isValidVideoUrl, neutralize linkToOpen’s href when it uses a javascript: scheme
before returning, so rejected candidates cannot execute on click; preserve the
existing behavior for other rejected URLs.

Thanks for this! The main fix works.
Here is the problem it solves.
GLightbox builds the video player by putting the link URL straight into HTML text.
So a URL with characters like " or > can add its own HTML to the page, like an extra <img> tag that runs code.
Escaping the URL first (turning " into " and so on) stops that.
The new unit tests and e2e test check this attack well.
All CI checks pass (Jest, build, and both Free e2e jobs).
One thing needs to change before this goes to QA.
[Blocker] Some video links that work today will stop opening in the lightbox
The new isValidVideoUrl() check only accepts a few exact URL formats.
GLightbox accepts more than that, and these links open in the lightbox on live sites right now:
Vimeo links with a private hash: https://vimeo.com/123456789/abcdef1234
With this PR, the check rejects these.
The site visitor clicks the image and gets sent to YouTube or Vimeo instead of seeing the popup.
A site owner who updates the plugin would see their lightbox "break" with no change on their side.
We don't change behavior for existing sites, so this needs fixing.
Simple fix: the escaping already blocks the attack.
So the check only needs to reject URLs that are clearly unsafe, not every URL with an unusual shape.
For example:
exportconstisValidVideoUrl=value=>{if(UNSAFE_URL_CHARACTER.test(value)){returnfalse}leturltry{url=newURL(value,window.location.href)}catch(error){returnfalse}// Only normal web links, and no "user:password@" in the URL.return['http:','https:'].includes(url.protocol)&&!url.username&&!url.password}
If you'd rather keep the format checks, please also accept the four link types above, and add a unit test for each.
[Minor] More links are now treated as videos
detectIfVideo() now ignores upper/lower case and also matches .ogg and youtube-nocookie.
That's closer to what GLightbox does, which is good.
But some links that were treated as normal links before now go through the video check.
For example, https://example.com/clip.MP4, or a page link like https://example.com/?ref=vimeo.com.
If the video check rejects them, they lose the lightbox without any warning.
Please confirm this is what you want, and add tests for these cases.
[Nit] One test isn't about this fix
The "Lightbox preserves image URL query parameters" test is useful.
But this PR doesn't change how image links work.
If it's there because of the sanitize() change, that's fine, please mention it in the PR description.
If not, consider moving it to its own PR so this fix stays small and easy to review.
We don't need another e2e test.
The new e2e test already checks the attack.
The extra link types above are easier to cover with unit tests.

[Blocker] This list only has exact host names, so m.youtube.com and music.youtube.com get rejected.
Those links open in the lightbox today, for example https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ.

[Blocker] This only allows vimeo.com/123456789.
It rejects https://vimeo.com/123456789/abcdef1234, which is how Vimeo shares private (unlisted) videos, and it works today.

[Minor] When the check fails, we skip the lightbox and the click opens the URL directly.
That's safe, but it's also why a check that's too strict turns into a visible change for site owners.
Keeping the check simple (only reject clearly unsafe URLs) means normal links never end up here.
Wait for the video source before checking for injection.
The marker check can pass before GLightbox renders the video source. Assert that the source URL contains the marker first. This also detects an unescaped URL that truncates the src attribute.

The earlier blockers are fixed.
What changed since the last review isValidVideoUrl() no longer requires a short list of exact URL shapes.
It only allows normal http/https links with no username or password.
HTML escaping still runs on video URLs before GLightbox builds its markup, so the injection path stays blocked.
Checked again
YouTube Shorts, m.youtube.com, music.youtube.com, and Vimeo links with a private hash are accepted, and unit tests cover them.
Unsafe schemes (javascript:, data:) and credential URLs are still rejected.
The e2e test now opens the lightbox and asserts the injected marker never appears, which matches the escape-at-the-sink approach.
All CI is green on this head (Jest, build x3, both Free e2e jobs, CodeRabbit).
Premium does not extend this lightbox frontend path.
No new change requests.
Ready for QA to click through Shorts / mobile YouTube / Vimeo hash / a normal mp4 lightbox once on a real page.
