Gutenberg's LinkControl now rejects shortcodes and dynamic values, so Stackable link fields use a direct URL input with URL-like validation instead of a settings toggle.

Gate unrestricted URL values with the Editor Settings option.
The new flow accepts non-URL values for every user. This conflicts with the requirement that unrestricted input is off by default.

Thanks! Letting link fields accept shortcodes and dynamic values again is a good change.
The unit tests and the new e2e test cover the new input well, and all CI checks pass.
One thing needs to change before this goes further.
[Blocker] Changing the saved HTML can break existing pages
Link.Content is used when a block is saved.
This PR now removes the href when it starts with javascript:, data:, or vbscript:.
Some sites already use links like javascript:void(0) on buttons, for example to open a popup with a script.
For those existing posts:
- When the post is opened in the editor, the saved HTML no longer matches what the block would save now.
WordPress then shows "This block contains unexpected or invalid content" on the button. - If the owner re-saves the post, the link is removed and the button stops doing what it did before.
We don't change behavior for existing sites, so please leave the saved HTML as it is.
Blocking these values when someone types them in the link field (the editor check you already added) is enough for new links.
WordPress also already strips javascript: links when a user can't post unfiltered HTML, so only admins and editors can save them.
[Minor] javascript:void(0) is a common, harmless value
With this PR, typing javascript:void(0) shows "Please enter a valid URL." and the field gets cleared.
Users who copy this from tutorials or popup plugins will be confused.
Consider allowing exactly javascript:void(0) / javascript:;, or showing a clearer message, like "Script links are not allowed."
No extra e2e test needed, the new e2e/tests/link-control.spec.ts covers the editor input.
Please add one unit test or e2e case that opens a block saved with an old javascript: link and checks it doesn't show as invalid.

[Blocker] This runs when the block is saved, so it changes the HTML of existing blocks.
A button saved before this update with href="javascript:void(0)" would show as "invalid content" in the editor, and lose its link when re-saved.
Please remove this check from Link.Content and keep the check only in the link field.

[Minor] javascript:void(0) is used a lot on buttons that trigger popups.
Blocking it with "Please enter a valid URL." will confuse people.
Consider allowing javascript:void(0) and javascript:;, or using a clearer error message for script links.

Thanks for fixing the earlier blockers. Existing javascript:void(0) links no longer go invalid on save, and the inert script values are allowed in the editor. The new e2e case that opens a legacy button is a solid check. All CI is green on this commit.
One new issue still needs a fix before this moves on.
[Blocker] Some real link values get turned into fake https URLs
When you leave the link field, values that only look a bit like a domain get https:// stuck on the front. That includes:
- File names:
readme.mdbecomeshttps://readme.md - Emails typed without
mailto::hi@example.combecomeshttps://hi@example.com - Relative paths without a leading slash:
images/photo.jpgbecomeshttps://images/photo.jpg
A site owner who pastes an email or a file path into a Button link will get a broken link on the live page.
An earlier commit on this same PR (fix: handle file names, emails, and localhost links) already fixed this and added unit tests for it. The later fix: simplify link validation commit removed that handling and those tests. Please bring that behavior back (file names and bare emails stay as typed; localhost:3000 still gets https://), and put the unit tests back so it does not regress again.
[Minor] Allow javascript:void(0); too
You now allow javascript:void(0) and javascript:;. Tutorials often include a trailing semicolon: javascript:void(0);. That still shows "Please enter a valid URL." and gets cleared. Please add void(0); to the inert list (exact match only, so void(0);alert(1) stays blocked).

[Blocker] This check matches any short "dot + letters" tip, including .md, .jpg, and the .com in an email. So on blur, readme.md, hi@example.com, and images/photo.jpg all become https://... and the live button points at the wrong place.
Please restore the earlier guards from this PR: keep file names and bare emails as typed, and only treat real host-looking values as domains. Put the unit tests for those cases back too.

[Minor] Please also allow the exact value void(0);. Many snippets use javascript:void(0); with the semicolon. Keep matching exact strings only so void(0);alert(1) stays rejected.

@Arukuen, a quick clarification on my last review. In that review I said that when the link field loses focus, plain text like file names ( I understand we discussed this before and agreed to keep it, because it matches how WordPress itself handles typed links. If that's right, I'll drop that part of the review, and the Can you confirm this is intentional? I've moved this PR to ❓Question on the board until you reply. |
|
Update: I'm dropping the blocker from my last review about There's one small, non-blocking suggestion left. All CI is green on |
The https:// behavior is intentional and matches WordPress. Remaining note is non-blocking.
Summary
This PR replaces Gutenberg’s restricted LinkControl with a direct URL input for Stackable link fields.
The goal is to follow Gutenberg’s normal link behavior where practical while allowing unrestricted values required by Stackable, such as shortcodes and dynamic values like
[lorem-ipsum]. Explicit HTTP links are preserved, while domains without a protocol receivehttps://.The permissive handling is intentional. This PR does not attempt to implement a comprehensive URL parser or add special cases for every possible URL format.
Security-sensitive schemes remain blocked.
javascript:,data:, andvbscript:values, including case and whitespace-obfuscated variants, are rejected and cleared. Unsafe stored values are also prevented from becoming renderedhrefattributes.Test plan
