[failproofai-feat-failproofai-cloud-login] Sign in to fp from a browser - #981
fp login can now sign you in from a browser, the way failproofai config has since #920. It starts on a link: authorize it and the terminal finishes on its own, or press Tab for an emailed code.
It also takes fp back to its earlier look: rounded panels, the purple ◆ fp mark, lowercase panel titles and red error boxes. That part changes only how output looks.
Cloud half: FailproofAI/agenteye#1277. This PR falls back to the emailed code against a Cloud without it, so the two can ship in either order.

Then the org picker if you're in several, and ● signed in.
It ends in your own session, not a machine key. Most of fp refuses API keys (orgs, agent, keys update, all of policies/fleet/guardrails), and fp deliberately never stores one. CliConfig is untouched, and fp logout, expiry and whoami work as they always have.
It starts on the link, with Tab to an emailed code and back. If it can't get a link (a rate limit, a server error) it drops to the code with a note saying so, so the default can't lock anyone out. Every interactive login makes a request at start, including one that goes on to use the code. Tab keeps what you typed and the same link, so going back and forth doesn't spend the rate limit or open more browser tabs, and an approval given in the meantime is still there. --email goes straight to the code. --json, pipes and anything without a terminal behave as before.
The org is chosen in the terminal, with the existing picker and --org. No admin rights needed.
A Cloud without this falls back to the code by itself: a 404, a redirect, or one that has failproofai config's login but drops kind and would end in a machine key. fp requires the echo, so nothing is approved or minted.
Over SSH or with no display it only shows the link, which works from any device. Coding agents are unchanged: the skill still tells them to ask the person to run fp login.
What happens
What the terminal does
Denied, or the link expires (10 min)
Enter gets a new link, Tab goes back to the email, Esc cancels
Connection drops
Keeps polling, says it's reconnecting
Esc or Ctrl-C
Cancels calmly, even if a poll in flight comes back approved
Terminal closed after approving
Never claimed, so no session ever exists
Changes
fp_cli/auth.py: start, poll and claim, await_browser_approval, browser opening, and display_text for server-supplied text.
fp_cli/select.py, fp_cli/output.py: Tab, the link screen and the link-ended step. The link sits right under a closed box, printed once and wrapped by the terminal: a border or Rich would break it for a click or a copy, and redrawing it with the spinner would clear a selection. Only the waiting lines under it are live.
fp_cli/commands/auth_cmds.py: the flow. The email steps moved into _email_code_in_box. A terminal with no raw mode (Windows) can't see Tab, so a blank answer at its email prompt means the link, through _browser_login_plain.
fp_cli/theme.py, fp_cli/output.py, fp_cli/app.py, fp_cli/cloud_output.py: the earlier look. fp_cli/commands/, client.py and models.py are untouched by it, and so is every assertion about --json and exit codes. Ids stay whole, wrapping instead of ending in …, and screens added since keep their plain tables.
The handler is launched directly, not through webbrowser, which can fall back to a text browser like lynx and take over the terminal in the middle of the box.
analytics.capture("logged_in") now carries method (browser or email). Telemetry is still behind the master kill switch.
README, skill, docs/reference/cloud-cli.mdx, and both changelogs.
__tests__/e2e/layout/fp-login.sh: new deliberate-run harness (README updated). The shared cli-login-driver.py gains type and typefile steps.
Testing
fp-cloud-cli/tests/test_browser_login.py: 116 new tests, covering every server answer and what it means, the plain flow through the real command, and when a browser may open. Full fp suite: 1,751 passed, 1 skipped, and fake_cloud_smoke.py passes. Root __tests__/ci: 267 passed, before the Tab and look changes, which are Python only.
fp-login.sh: 151 of 153 on this head. The 2 failures are the sign-in email's new wording, because the stack's server wasn't rebuilt with #1277's latest (see Not tested). It runs against an isolated compose stack, with the real fp in a real pty, real approvals through the dashboard API, and real email through mailpit: browser login, org picker and --org, the email code with Tab and with --email, Tab to the email and back, no terminal, deny + retry, expiry, esc and ctrl-c, esc during a poll that comes back approved, also after a non-ASCII key (no claim), a key pressed during a poll that comes back denied, ctrl-c during every request, an approval nobody collects (no session), a dropped connection across a real dashboard restart, opening the browser (with a stand-in xdg-open), a Cloud with no such route, a real pre-change Cloud (nothing minted), the network warning and when the email goes out on both kinds of deployment, the person-side refusals, a session from a link being refused when it tries to approve another, logout revoking on the server, and no secret in any log.
cli-login.sh: 54 of 54, the failproofai config regression over the routes both flows share.
Terminal output checked through a terminal emulator on the final flow at 80x24, and one step earlier at 120x40: the link whole under the box, and Tab and Esc redraw without stray rows. On the flat look, before it changed, also at nine more sizes down to 30 columns and 5 rows. One real login went through a clean install on a real pty.
The look compared with the code before the redesign: 27 renders across nine screens at 80, 100 and 140 columns. 16 are identical, and the rest differ only by the extra help rows, values that wrap instead of ending in …, and this PR's welcome line.
Mutation-checked: ignoring the kind echo, opening any link scheme, giving up on a dropped connection, printing server text raw, opening a browser over SSH, offering a link without a terminal, saving a login whose link ended, letting a queued key answer the next screen, ctrl-c escaping a request, and saving a token no later request could carry each fail a test when broken. All 31 fp targets were caught on this flow; the server and dashboard targets last ran on #1277's previous head and that code hasn't changed.
Not tested
fp-login.sh against #1277's final server. Its two checks on the email's wording need that server, and the stack wasn't rebuilt. CI's server tests cover the wording itself.
The older-Cloud phase of fp-login.sh on this head. It needs a second stack, and last passed before the look changed. The fallback itself passed against a stand-in server.
Windows and macOS. The Windows path ran only under a simulated terminal through the test runner, and the macOS opener has only a unit test.
fp launching a real browser. The E2E used a stand-in xdg-open. The page itself was tested in real Chromium, opened directly.
Note for reviewers
Fix in cli-login.sh, outside this feature:has and hasnt piped into grep -q under pipefail. On input bigger than a pipe buffer, grep exits at the first match and printf dies of SIGPIPE, so a found string reads as missing. That made hasnt able to falsely pass, for example on a secret in the logs. Both scripts now use a bash substring match.
The harness needs an AgentEye stack with the Cloud half, so it can't pass until that PR is in the stack under test. It stops and restarts the dashboard container once, to test a dropped connection.
Known limits: Esc during a stalled poll takes effect when that poll times out, up to 10 seconds later, and a server dripping bytes never trips that timeout. After Ctrl-Z and fg, Esc needs an Enter behind it, because nothing re-enters raw mode (the email-code box has the same gap on main). Ctrl-C is immediate in all of these, and no session is created. Polling on a thread would fix the first if it ever matters.
What differs from main without a terminal: the look, and the welcome line on stderr no longer mentions a code. Exit codes, saved files and requests matched main across 15 side-by-side cases, run before the look changed: pipes, --json, --email, --org, CI, and server errors.
Two places the look doesn't go back exactly:error(), success(), warn() and print_table titles keep the old colours but print their text literally, because restoring them would make a [/] in a server's message a traceback. And fp errors gets a 28-column floor on its summary, or full ids squeeze it to 8 at 100 wide.
Known limit of whole ids: in fp errors at 80 columns the time splits at its space. It stays whole at 100 and up.
Already on main, not changed here: a hostile server can put terminal escapes in org slugs (the same on the email path), and fp login <&- is a traceback.
Not changed from review: a 429 on the poll path still reads as reconnecting and keeps polling. Nothing on that path returns one (the server answers slow_down with a 200), and carrying on is harmless if a proxy ever did.
No version bump.fp-cloud-cli ships at 0.0.3b0, the section its bump job already opened, and the npm package's version doesn't move.
fp login now offers browser authorization alongside emailed one-time codes. Interactive terminal users can choose a method; browser login can display a link for authorization from another device.
Email-code login remains available with --email and is used for non-interactive and JSON flows. Login falls back to email when browser authorization is unavailable.
Documentation
Updated CLI help, reference guides, and sign-in instructions to describe the available login methods and their behavior.
…wser
On a terminal, `fp login` now asks: browser opens a link (or prints it over SSH or
with no display), the person authorizes it, and the terminal finishes on its own;
email sends the 6-digit code as before. Either way it ends in the same session,
because most of `fp` refuses API keys and it never stores one.
`--email`, `--json` and anything without a terminal behave as they always did. A
Cloud without browser login falls back to the code by itself, including one that has
`failproofai config`'s login but drops `kind` and would end in a machine key:
`fp` requires the echo, so nothing is approved and nothing is minted.
Adds `__tests__/e2e/layout/fp-login.sh`, and fixes `has`/`hasnt` in `cli-login.sh`,
which could report the wrong result on large output under pipefail.

fp login now supports browser authorization alongside emailed one-time codes. Interactive terminals can offer either method, while --email, JSON, and non-terminal use retain the email-code flow. The change adds authentication helpers, updated prompts and documentation, tests, and a manual end-to-end harness.
Changes: Browser Login for fp
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Browser login API client fp-cloud-cli/fp_cli/auth.py, fp-cloud-cli/tests/test_browser_login.py
The CLI adds browser-login request, polling, approval-wait, and claim helpers. Tests cover response validation, network and API errors, URL opening, display-text sanitization, and client behavior.
Interactive login offers browser or email-code sign-in. The command retains email-code paths for --email, JSON, and non-terminal use, and falls back to email when browser login is unavailable. Help, output, and documentation describe the available flows.
The manual harness checks browser and email login scenarios, including approval, fallback, cancellation, reconnection, session handling, and refusal cases. The pseudo-terminal driver adds text and file input steps, and the assertion helpers use Bash substring matching.

Explanation
The pull request description does not follow the repository template, but it is substantively complete. The template asks for a description, a Type of Change selection, and a checklist (npm run lint, npx tsc --noEmit, npm run test:run, npm run build). The author gives a detailed What section explaining the browser-based fp login, and Changes and Testing sections. The Type of Change checkboxes are not marked; the change is a new feature. The template checklist is not present; the author reports Python test suites (fp suite, root tests/ci) and E2E harnesses, which do not match the template's npm commands. Because the required description content is present and the template-specific fields are missing, the check is inconclusive rather than failed.
Resolution
Mark the 'New feature' box under Type of Change. Add the template checklist and state the result of each item, or state why an item does not apply to this Python CLI change (for example, that npm run lint, npx tsc --noEmit, npm run test:run and npm run build are not run for fp-cloud-cli, and which checks were run instead). Keep the existing What, Changes, Testing, and Not tested sections.

The test discards the runner.invoke result. It asserts only that poll and claim were not called. Login can stop before the OTP request and the test still passes. Capture the result and the otp/request route, then assert that the fallback ran:

The diagnosis is supported: the scan does not cover the poll-body secret. The "already-used secret" remedy is not established as sufficient. A pending request is the safer remedy because it exercises the normal poll path.
Add a pending poll secret to the final log scan.
The scan at lines 512-515 searches only $SECRET. Phase 12 sends that value only to /api/auth/cli/claim. The CLI sends its poll_secret to /api/auth/cli/poll (fp_cli/auth.py:337-338). If the server logs poll request bodies, a leaked poll secret can pass this check.
Poll with a new pending request before the scan. A pending poll uses the normal path. A claimed secret can be rejected before the server logs the body.

Handle HTTP 429 from the poll endpoint instead of treating it as a dropped connection.
poll_browser_login raises NetworkError for every status except 200 and 404. await_browser_approval treats that error as offline and polls again after login.interval, so a 429 shows "reconnecting" and the retry-after header is never read. Handle 429 on the poll path the way start_browser_login does, and honor retry-after before the next poll.

…odd server answers
From review. A huge integer from the server crashed `fp login` with a traceback:
`math.isfinite` raises past a float's range, and a huge session lifetime did the same
through `timedelta` when saving. A link with no host (`https://:443/`) read as openable
and left the terminal waiting on something no browser could open.
In the E2E harness, `typefile` could type an empty file while the shell was still
writing it, and an interrupted run could leave the dashboard container stopped.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Add an interruption test for the dashboard restore in cleanup.
The cleanup trap restarts the dashboard container at __tests__/e2e/layout/fp-login.sh:61 only when DASH_STOPPED is 1. Phase 8 restarts the container directly and sets DASH_STOPPED back to 0 at line 345. On that normal path, line 61 does not run. No scenario interrupts the harness while DASH_STOPPED is 1. Removing or breaking line 61 would therefore leave every current assertion passing.
Add a scenario that interrupts the harness during the sleep 5 at line 343. After the harness exits, assert that $DASH_CONTAINER is running. This check exercises the restore path in cleanup and fails if that path stops restarting the container.

Request changes: Esc during an in-flight approved poll still claims and saves a session. Other exercised client flows passed; real Cloud integration remains untested.
What the PR says it does
Claim
Evidence
verified
Browser approval finishes terminal login with a saved human session.
The installed wheel completed start → poll → claim against controlled HTTP replies, saved the session in cli-auth.json with mode 0600, and reported session mode through whoami. Real Cloud session issuance remains untested separately.
verified
Terminal users can choose browser or email; --email, --json, and non-terminal input preserve email login.
Real PTY tests exercised both menu choices and --email. Piped and JSON runs completed email login without calling browser routes.
verified
Org selection remains in the terminal and supports --org without admin privileges.
Controlled viewer memberships exercised single-org selection, the multi-org arrow picker, and --org beta. Each saved the expected org.
verified
Older Clouds fall back to email without polling or claiming a machine-key login.
404, redirect, missing-kind, and unsafe-link replies fell back successfully without poll or claim requests. The running dashboard at port 8020 also returned 404 and reached the email step.
verified
Denied or expired links support a fresh link or returning to the menu.
PTY tests exercised denied, expired, and claimed replies, Enter retry, and Esc back to the method menu.
verified
A dropped connection keeps polling and displays reconnecting.
A controlled HTTP server closed the poll connection. The installed CLI displayed reconnecting, polled again, and completed on the same login request.
broken
Esc and Ctrl-C cancel calmly without claiming a session.
Ordinary waiting cancellation passed. Esc during a held poll followed by an approved response caused a claim, saved token, and signed-in output.
verified
SSH and display availability control browser opening while the link remains visible.
A stand-in xdg-open received exactly the authorization URL on a simulated local display. With an SSH marker, it was not invoked. Terminal captures show the printed link.
verified
Saved sessions retain whoami, logout, and expiry behavior.
Controlled-server runs checked session-mode whoami, already-signed-in login, logout clearing local credentials, signed-out whoami, and login after local expiry.
verified
The login telemetry method remains behind the master kill switch.
Both login paths pass method to the existing capture function. analytics_config.TELEMETRY_DISABLED remains true; the full analytics test suite passed.
untested
Real Cloud authorization creates no machine key, abandoned approvals create no session, and logout revokes server-side.
The integration harness stopped at missing Mailpit/Postgres preconditions. AgentEye PR #1277 was inaccessible without credentials. These server guarantees could not be verified.
untested
Native Windows/macOS flows and launching a real browser work.
Only Linux PTY behavior, a stand-in Linux opener, and the repository's simulated platform tests were available.
Notes
One reproducible blocker: cancellation can still create and save a session.
The main controlled CLI run passed 22 of 23 scenarios. All 1,682 Python tests and 267 root CI tests passed.
Cloud results are limited to client behavior against controlled HTTP replies. The supplied stack lacks the AgentEye authentication backend.

What this changes
Adds browser authorization that requests and saves a human session.
Starts interactive login on the browser link, with Tab switching to email.
Adds compatibility fallback, retries, connection recovery and cancellation handling.
Restores rounded panels and purple branding while preserving JSON output and full identifiers.
Updates documentation and login verification harnesses.

What the PR says it does
Claim
Evidence
verified
Browser login requests and saves a human session rather than a machine key.
Installed-CLI HTTP checks completed start → poll → claim → membership lookup. Start requested kind=session; credentials were saved with mode 0600 and subsequent requests used the session cookie.
verified
Interactive login starts on the link; Tab preserves typed email, the same link and approval received while viewing email.
PTY checks completed browser and email login, restored reviewer@ after switching methods and collected approval on returning to the original link. Only one start request occurred.
verified
--email, --json, pipes and redirected stderr retain emailed-code login.
Installed-CLI terminal and pipe checks completed these paths with zero browser requests. Piped JSON login returned a valid JSON result.
verified
Organization selection stays in the terminal, supports --org and needs no admin rights.
Controlled viewer memberships passed the arrow picker and --org beta. Unknown organizations were rejected; cancelling the picker retained the saved session.
verified
Unsupported Clouds fall back to email without polling or claiming a machine-key request.
404, redirect, HTML, missing-kind, machine-key-kind, missing-secret and unsafe or malformed URL responses completed email fallback with zero polls and claims. The running dashboard's 404 also fell back.
broken
A rate limit or server error while requesting a link automatically falls back to emailed-code login.
The boxed flow completed email login after 429, 422, 500 and disconnection responses. The simulated plain terminal flow exited on 429 and 500 without offering email or sending an OTP request. Evidence: /out/review-extra/plain-no-raw-429/ and /out/review-extra/plain-no-raw-500/.
verified
Ended links support fresh-link retries, returning to email and cancellation.
PTY checks fetched fresh links after denied, expired, claimed and unknown statuses. Additional checks used Tab after denial and Esc after expiry without claiming or saving credentials.
verified
Dropped connections keep polling and display recovery.
The installed CLI recovered from a disconnected socket and HTTP 500, continued through slow_down and signed in using the original link. Plain-flow recovery tests also passed.
verified
Cancellation before claim prevents collecting approval, and Ctrl-C exits calmly during browser requests.
Held-poll Esc, Unicode-before-Esc, Tab and terminal-closure checks sent zero claims. Ctrl-C during start, poll and claim exited calmly; interrupted claim saved no credentials.
verified
Browser opening respects SSH/display availability, and the link stays whole and opens only once.
An xdg-open stand-in received exactly one URL despite method switching; SSH suppressed opening. Terminal captures retained the link as one uninterrupted run. Platform/display unit tests passed.
Installed-CLI checks covered whoami, repeat login, orgs list, logout, expired-session login and --force cancellation preserving credentials. Invalid tokens, missing identity and failed claims saved no session; a huge lifetime was bounded safely.
verified
The restored look preserves full identifiers, literal server text and JSON behavior; telemetry remains disabled.
Human and JSON events, errors and sessions checks retained identifiers without ellipses. Error summaries displayed [/] and [red] literally. Inspected terminal screenshots show rounded panels and purple branding. Both login paths supply method; TELEMETRY_DISABLED remains true.
verified
The shared harness supports typed input, delayed code files and reliable substring assertions.
The changed driver completed installed-CLI email login after waiting through an empty code file. Both substring helpers detected literal metacharacters and secret markers in two-megabyte input.
untested
Real Cloud authorization enforces person-side restrictions, creates sessions only on claim, sends the intended warnings/emails and revokes sessions on logout.
The running dashboard lacks Cloud authorization routes and its page. The integration harness stopped at unavailable Mailpit/Postgres prerequisites; linked AgentEye PR #1277 returned 404 without credentials. Controlled responses cannot establish these server guarantees.
untested
Native Windows/macOS behavior and launching a real browser work.
Only Linux PTYs, the simulated plain terminal path, platform unit tests and a Linux opener stand-in were available.

…the last poll
From review. A key pressed while a poll was in flight sat unread in stdin, so when
that poll came back approved, `fp` claimed the session and saved it anyway, after the
person had cancelled. Pending keys are now read right before the claim, the last
moment a cancel can be honoured. `fp-login.sh` gains a stand-in that holds a poll open.
Also from review:
- A claim with no `user.id` or `user.email` is refused. `persist_session` keeps the
previous identity when a field is missing, so it would have saved the new session
under whoever was signed in before.
- A link with an out-of-range port no longer reads as openable.
- The plain flow (no raw mode) asks again on a typo instead of starting a browser login,
ends calmly on Ctrl-C, says when it is reconnecting, and no longer promises a code
in its welcome line.

claim_browser_login applies the display-only, 200-character display_text limit to the identity it returns for persistence. A valid longer email could therefore be saved as a different address.
The CLI displays and saves a truncated address, and a later fp login --email with the full address may unnecessarily re-authenticate.
This can occur when: The claim response contains a valid email longer than 200 characters.

Update claim_browser_login to avoid using display_text’s 200-character

is a nonempty string, preserve the existing response and identity checks, and
return the untruncated address so valid longer emails remain unchanged.
Record the held poll and assert that the stand-in received it.
The held run presses Esc 2 seconds after the "waiting for you" text. Its assertions pass when Esc arrives before the first poll. In that case the CLI cancels during the wait-key check and never polls. The run then passes without exercising an approved poll that is still in flight, so it does not guard the drain that discards keys after an approved poll.
Record each /poll on entry. Then assert that the stand-in received one poll during the held run. A count of one with no claim shows that the approved poll ran with Esc pending. A count of zero shows that Esc cancelled before the poll.

Review comment at @__tests__/e2e/layout/fp-login.sh at line 371:
Update the held-run stand-in and `run_fp` test to record each `/poll` when the
request enters the handler, then assert that exactly one poll occurred and no
claim was recorded. This ensures the test exercises Esc arriving while an
approved poll is in flight rather than passing after cancellation before
polling.
Queue the Esc key during the poll stub in the unit tests.
The Esc test and the other-key test both queue their keys before await_browser_approval runs. The stub returns "approved" without reading a key. A check placed before the poll, using the same drain loop, would read the queued keys and still pass both tests. The unit tests therefore do not detect a regression that moves the key read.
Keep a reference to the _Box in each test. Have the stub add the key to box.keys and then return "approved". Do not have the stub call tick. tick reads keys during the poll and raises there, so it does not test the read after approval. With this change, a check placed only before the poll would not see the key, and the Esc test would fail when it claims.

verified
Browser approval completes login with a saved human session.
Installed-wheel PTY runs completed start → poll → claim → membership lookup against controlled HTTP replies, saved the session with mode 0600, and reported session authentication through whoami.
verified
Terminal users can choose browser or email; --email, --json, and pipes preserve email login.
Both PTY menu choices, TTY --email, piped input, and JSON login passed. Email-only variants made no browser requests.
verified
Org selection remains in the terminal and supports --org without admin rights.
Controlled viewer memberships exercised automatic single-org selection, the multi-org arrow picker, and --org beta. Expected orgs were saved.
verified
Older Clouds fall back to email without polling or claiming a machine-key request.
404, redirect, HTML, missing-kind, machine-key-kind, unsafe-link, and invalid-port replies reached email login with zero polls and claims. The running dashboard's 404 also reached email fallback.
verified
Denied or expired links support retrying or returning to the menu.
PTY runs exercised denied, expired, claimed, and unknown statuses; Enter fetched a fresh link and completed login. Esc returned to the method menu.
verified
Dropped connections keep polling and display reconnecting.
The controlled server closed the first poll connection. The installed CLI displayed reconnecting, retried, and completed the same login.
broken
Esc and Ctrl-C cancel without claiming, including during an approved in-flight poll.
Esc alone, ASCII input followed by Esc, arrow input followed by Esc, and Ctrl-C passed. Non-ASCII input followed by Esc during the held poll still claimed and saved a session in two reproductions.
verified
SSH and display availability control browser opening while the link stays visible.
A stand-in xdg-open received exactly the authorization URL with a local display. An SSH marker suppressed it. Terminal captures show the link above the waiting output.
verified
Saved sessions retain whoami, logout, and expiry behavior.
Controlled runs verified session-mode whoami, already-signed-in login, logout sending the session cookie and clearing local credentials, signed-out whoami, and reauthentication after local expiry.
verified
Malformed server replies fail safely, and login-method telemetry remains disabled by the master switch.
Installed CLI checks rejected missing identity, machine-key claims, and revoked claims without saving credentials; huge numbers did not crash. The full Python suite passed sanitization and simulated-platform tests. Both login paths pass method to capture; TELEMETRY_DISABLED remains true.
verified
The shared harness handles typed values and reliable substring assertions.
The changed PTY driver completed email login using type and a delayed typefile initially left empty. Both scripts' substring helpers correctly handled literal metacharacters and input larger than 1 MiB.
untested
Real Cloud authorization creates no machine key, abandoned approvals create no session, network warnings and emails work, and logout revokes server-side.
Both integration harnesses stopped at missing backend prerequisites. The running dashboard lacks these authentication routes; AgentEye PR #1277 returned 404 without credentials.
untested
Native Windows/macOS behavior and launching a real browser work.
Only Linux PTYs, a stand-in Linux opener, and repository simulated-platform tests were available.
Notes
F1 remains open; no duplicate review comment is posted.
The installed CLI passed 37 controlled checks. Two cancellation reproductions failed. All 1,697 Python tests and 267 root CI tests passed.
Real Cloud authorization and server guarantees remain untested because the required backend is unavailable.
…both kinds of deployment
The Cloud half now only believes a client address behind a trusted ingress. A default
deployment must ignore a forged address and still send the email, and the warning is
only reachable with `DASHBOARD_TRUSTED_INGRESS=1`, so `fp-login.sh` takes `TRUSTED_DASH`
and covers both through real Next servers.

Check the fp exit status and saved session in the plainbox phase.
The plainbox phase waits for fp login to finish but does not read its exit status or the saved session. Its only checks count sign-in mails, and that count does not depend on whether fp login succeeded. If fp login fails after the claim, the phase can still pass. Phase 1 already performs these two checks, so they can be added here.

Update the plainbox phase after wait_done to verify the real fp process exited
successfully and saved a non-empty session token before checking sign-in mail.
Keep the existing mail checks unchanged.
Check the same-network claim response before the no-email assertion.
The same-network block discards the approval and claim output. Its only assertion checks that no new sign-in email arrives. If the approval or claim fails and no sign-in email is sent, that assertion still passes. api_claim does not fail on HTTP errors, and the script does not stop on errors, so the test cannot tell a successful same-network claim from a failed one.
The AWAY block already checks its claim response for session_token. The SAME block should make the same check on its captured claim response before the email assertion.

In the same-network block, capture the response from api_claim instead of
discarding it, then assert that it contains session_token before the no-email

Wait the same bounded window before the no-email count.
The same-network check sleeps 4 seconds after api_claim. It then counts sign-in emails for $SAME once. sign_in_mails matches any Mailpit message with that recipient and the new sign-in subject. A sign-in email delivered after the 4-second sleep is not counted, so the check can pass.
The positive checks use wait_sign_in_mail, which polls for about 15 seconds. Change the negative check to wait about 15 seconds before it counts, so both checks use the same window. This adds about 11 seconds to the harness run.
This wait checks only the 15-second window. It does not prove that no email is sent later.

Scan the trusted-ingress session tokens in the log check.
The trusted-ingress phase claims two sessions. The AWAY response is held in C, but its session_token is never extracted. The SAME response is discarded. The log loop checks only $TOKEN, $CLAIMED_TOKEN, and $SECRET. A server log that records either trusted-ingress token can pass this check.
The loop also reads only $SERVER_CONTAINER and $DASH_CONTAINER. The script does not name the container behind $TRUSTED_DASH. Its logs are outside this scan. Covering them requires a container variable for that deployment, which this change does not add.
The new tokens are initialized before the optional block, so the loop does not read unset variables under set -u. Each check skips an empty token, because hasnt fails on an empty needle.

…ore claiming, whatever it is
From review. The first byte of a non-ASCII character reads as an empty string, and the
loop draining pending keys took that as "none left". So Esc typed after one was never
read, and the login claimed and saved a session anyway. It now stops only on `None`.
`fp-login.sh` covers it with a held poll.
Also from review: the plain flow says when it is back online instead of leaving
"reconnecting" as its last line, and an interrupted harness run no longer leaves the
held stand-in running.

Clear HELD_PID after the explicit kill.
The harness kills the held stand-in at line 397 but leaves HELD_PID set. cleanup then signals the same PID again at line 66 when the EXIT trap runs, after later phases have run. If the shell has reaped that child and the kernel reuses its PID in the meantime, the second kill sends SIGTERM to an unrelated process owned by the same user.

After the harness explicitly kills the held stand-in, clear HELD_PID so cleanup
does not signal the same PID again during the EXIT trap. Keep cleanup’s existing
conditional kill behavior for a PID that has not already been terminated.
Wait for the held poll before sending the non-ASCII key and Esc.
The sleep:1 step does not show that the held /poll request has started. The first poll starts about 1 s after the CLI enters its wait loop. The Esc arrives about 1.6 s after the driver sees waiting for you. If the poll starts later than the Esc, the loop reads the Esc before any poll. The case then passes with cancelled and no claim, and the approved-poll drain does not run. A regression in that drain can then go unnoticed on that run. The held case uses sleep:2, so its Esc has more margin. This case has less.
Make the stand-in log each /poll arrival. Make the driver wait for that log entry before it sends the é and Esc keys. Use a per-run signal, because the held run already produces a poll.

…later request could carry, and send any hostname
`claim_browser_login` saved any non-empty string as the session. A hostile or broken server could
hand back a token with a control or non-ASCII character: it was written to cli-auth.json, every
later command failed on it, and a non-ASCII one made `fp whoami` a traceback. A hostname that isn't
UTF-8 was a traceback at `start`, because Python hands those bytes back as surrogates and JSON can't
carry them, and a blank one was a 422 from the server with no fallback to the emailed code.

…ring the last poll answer the next screen
Pending keys were only read when that poll came back approved. On a poll that came back denied or
expired, a queued Enter went straight to `link_ended`, so a new link started with "not authorized"
on screen for no time at all, and a queued Esc went back to the menu when the screen had promised
to cancel. Pending keys are now read whatever the poll said.
Ctrl-C while asking for a link or finishing sign-in also wasn't the calm cancel the PR promises: it
left the box with exit 130 and no message. It now covers every request of the browser flow. The
email path is deliberately left as it is on main.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…stderr is redirected, and say when the plain flow is back
`fp login 2>file` on a terminal now offered the browser flow, with the link and the waiting going
to that file: Enter started a login the person couldn't see or finish. Main asked for an email, so
this broke the claim that only a terminal sees anything new. The plain menu now needs stderr to be a
terminal too, which it is on Windows, the case it exists for. The test fixture stubs the new check
for that reason: the condition it pins changed.
`_browser_login_plain` also never said "back online" when the very next poll was the approval, as
CodeRabbit pointed out, leaving "reconnecting" as its last word.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ck a session can't renew itself, and correct the CLI reference
Phase 8 approved the moment the dashboard came back, so the next poll could be the approval and `fp`
never said it was waiting again, which the driver was waiting for. It failed one run in three. It
now approves only once `fp` is waiting, so the test asks the same question without the race.
Phase 12 now checks the Cloud half's refusal end to end: a session claimed from a link can look at
another link, can't approve it, and leaves it pending. That needs FailproofAI/agenteye#1277's latest
commit in the stack under test.
The public reference said the page warns on a different network, with no word about deployments
that can't tell. They send the email and show no warning.

`fp login` opened on a menu, and the link went above the box. The owner asked for the email first,
with a hint that Tab signs in with a browser or SSO, and the link in the box.
Tab now goes from the email to the link and back, keeping what was typed and the same link: another
each time would spend the rate limit, leave rows behind and open another browser tab, and an
approval given at the email would be lost. Coming back keeps the link's countdown. Esc cancels on
every screen, including one where the link ended, where Tab goes back to the email.
The link is printed, not drawn. The frame redraws on every tick, which clears a person's selection,
and Rich would break a long link across lines. Only the waiting lines under it stay live, and the
terminal does the wrapping. A terminal with no raw mode can't see Tab, so a blank answer at its
email prompt means the link. Anything without a terminal is never offered one.

`Table` still forces wrapping, so a long value wraps instead of ending in `…`. `print_table` keeps
its narrow branch that stacks fields.
- Screens added after the redesign keep their heading and plain table, in the old palette. They
never had a design to return to.
- `error()`, `success()`, `warn()` and `print_table` titles keep the old colours but print their text
literally. Restoring them exactly would parse Rich markup, and a `[/]` in a server's message would
be a traceback.
With real borders the login link can't sit inside the box: a border would break a link wider than
the window, so it couldn't be clicked or copied whole. It sits right under a closed box instead,
with only the waiting lines below it live.
Full ids squeezed the `fp errors` summary to 8 columns at 100 wide, so it gets a floor of 28 and the
long ids wrap instead.

…ogin hints
The owner asked for the word `enter` rather than the `⏎` symbol, and just `SSO` on the email line:
`enter send a code · tab SSO · esc cancel`. The symbol goes everywhere it was shown, so one login
doesn't mix the two: the screen where a link ended, both org pickers and `fp orgs switch --help`.
Only a hint with separators lights up its keys now, or the "enter" in "enter the 6-digit code" would
read as a key.
`fp-login.sh` also looks for the sign-in email's new wording from FailproofAI/agenteye#1277, so the
stack under test needs that head.

What the PR says it does
Claim
Evidence
verified
Browser login requests and saves a human session rather than a machine key.
The installed wheel completed start → approved poll → claim → membership lookup against controlled HTTP responses. It requested kind=session, saved credentials with mode 0600 and used the session cookie for subsequent commands.
verified
Email appears first; Tab preserves typed input, the same link and an approval received while on the email screen.
Real PTY checks restored reviewer@ after switching back, completed both login methods and collected approval on returning to the original link. Only one start request occurred. The updated Enter/SSO hints appeared.
verified
--email, --json, pipes and redirected stderr retain emailed-code login.
Installed-CLI PTY and pipe checks completed these paths with zero browser-start, poll or claim requests. Piped JSON login returned a valid JSON result.
verified
Organization selection remains in the terminal, supports --org and requires no admin rights.
Viewer memberships passed the arrow picker and explicit --org beta. An unknown org was rejected. Cancelling the picker retained the saved session.
verified
Unsupported Clouds fall back to email without polling or claiming a machine-key request.
404, redirect, HTML, missing-kind, machine-key-kind, unsafe-URL, invalid-port, empty-host and missing-secret responses completed email fallback with zero polls and claims. The running dashboard's 404 also fell back calmly.
verified
Ended links support fresh-link retries, returning to email and cancellation.
PTY checks covered denied, expired, claimed and unknown statuses. Enter fetched new links after denial and expiry; Tab returned to email; Esc cancelled. Enter queued during a denied poll did not automatically retry.
verified
Dropped connections keep polling and display recovery.
The installed CLI recovered from a disconnected socket and HTTP 500, continued through slow_down and signed in using the original link. The simulated no-raw-mode flow reported reconnecting and back online.
verified
Cancellation prevents a client claim before approval is collected, and Ctrl-C exits calmly during browser requests.
Held-poll Esc, Unicode-before-Esc, Tab and terminal-closure checks sent zero claims. Ctrl-C during start, poll and claim exited calmly; interrupted claim saved no credentials.
verified
Browser opening respects SSH/display availability, and the link remains whole and opens only once.
A Linux xdg-open stand-in received exactly the URL once despite switching methods. SSH suppressed opening; display rules passed unit tests. Raw PTY captures retained the URL as one contiguous run.
Installed-CLI checks covered whoami, repeat login, orgs list, logout cookie delivery/local clearing, expired-session login and --force cancellation preserving credentials. Invalid tokens, missing identity, ended claims and server failures saved no session or traceback; a huge lifetime was bounded safely.
verified
The restored look preserves whole identifiers, literal server text and JSON behavior; telemetry remains disabled.
Human and JSON events, errors and sessions checks retained full identifiers. Error summaries displayed [/] and [red] literally. Inspected colored terminal captures confirmed purple branding and rounded panels. Both login paths supply method; TELEMETRY_DISABLED remains true.
verified
The shared harness supports typed input, delayed code files and reliable substring assertions.
The changed driver completed installed-CLI email login after waiting through an empty code file. Both substring helpers handled literal metacharacters and two-megabyte input, correctly detecting a present secret marker.
untested
Real Cloud authorization enforces person-side restrictions, creates sessions only on claim, sends the intended warnings/emails and revokes sessions on logout.
The running dashboard has no Cloud authorization routes or page. The integration harness stopped at missing Mailpit and Postgres prerequisites, and linked AgentEye PR #1277 returned 404 without credentials. Controlled responses cannot establish these server guarantees.

Native Windows/macOS behavior and launching a real browser work.

…ser link, with Tab to an emailed code
The owner asked for the link by default. `fp login` on a terminal now opens straight on it, and Tab
goes to the email and back, keeping what was typed and the same link. `--email`, `--json` and
anything without a terminal still use the code.
With the link as the default, failing to get one can't be the end of the login: a rate limit or a
5xx at `start` now drops to the emailed code with a note saying so, as a Cloud without browser login
already did. A failed claim doesn't, because someone approved that link and a code would hide why it
didn't work.
A terminal with no raw mode can't see Tab, so it keeps its prompt, where Enter means the link. Every
interactive login now makes a request at `start`, including one that goes on to use the code.
Esc at the email also left `❯ email ▌` on the cancelled screen, which the emulator caught once that
screen became a place people leave from.

blocker The new startup-failure fallback is missing from the plain terminal flow used when raw mode is unavailable, including Windows. Using the installed package with only raw-mode support disabled, pressing Enter for browser login against a start endpoint returning 429 or 500 exited with code 1 or 3 and sent no OTP request, although email login was available. Catch ApiError and NetworkError around this start call, display _NO_LINK_NOW and return None so login() continues with email. Keep claim failures separate, and add plain-terminal command tests for these responses.

cli-login.sh, outside this feature:hasandhasntpiped intogrep -qunderpipefail. Both scripts now use a bash substring match.fg, Esc needs an Enter behind it, because nothing re-enters raw mode (the email-code box has the same gap onmain).
