fix: harden SQL classification for the tool CLI and MCP server - #1644
Follow-up to #1609 (merged), as one commit on main. It holds the classifier hardening from later review rounds of #1609, kept out of that PR after it was approved. Most of these gaps also exist on main.

What does this PR do?
#1609 exposes the SQL classifier to outside agents (MCP server, altimate tool run): reads run by default, writes need --allow-write, and DROP DATABASE / DROP SCHEMA / TRUNCATE are refused even then. This PR fixes cases where the classifier read the SQL differently from the warehouse.
sql_explain: newly reachable through #1609; its tool code is unchanged from main.
It sent the caller's SQL to the warehouse unchecked. On Redshift and DuckDB the driver runs every statement in the text, so SELECT 1; DELETE FROM t ran the DELETE without --allow-write.
Input starting with ANALYZE became EXPLAIN ANALYZE, which executes the statement.
It now explains a single statement only, refuses EXPLAIN options in its input, and refuses blocked SQL.
Writes that were read as reads (on main too):
Snowflake ->> statement chains.
dbt Jinja anywhere in the SQL on the dbt route. {% do run_query(...) %} runs at compile time, even inside a comment.
Spark/Hive TRANSFORM ... USING.
Functions that write or call outside systems:
ClickHouse jdbc
Spark reflect and java_method
Databricks http_request and remote_query
DuckDB bigquery_execute, ducklake_*, postgres_attach and sqlite_attach
Snowflake GETNEXTVAL
Sequence advances (.NEXTVAL), including quoted or commented forms, in Oracle, Snowflake and MariaDB.
A quote inside a Spark or MySQL /*+ hint */, Oracle q'...' quotes, a Spark -- comment ending in a backslash, and a /* inside a comment where nesting is unknown. These now make the SQL uncertain, so it is refused rather than read.
ClickHouse $tag$...$tag$ heredocs are lexed as strings.
DROP DATABASE / DROP SCHEMA / TRUNCATE block (on main too). The block reads the SQL text, so it is best effort. docs/docs/usage/tool.md now says so, and recommends a database user without DROP/TRUNCATE for a hard guarantee. Within that:
A write's literals are read as SQL, with escapes decoded as each engine decodes them. This covers EXEC(...), sp_executesql, EXECUTE IMMEDIATE, PREPARE ... FROM, DO $$...$$, dblink_exec, and routine bodies created and called in one call.
TRUNCATE followed by a target is a statement wherever it sits:
at the start of a statement, a block (BEGIN [NOT] ATOMIC, REPEAT, ...) or a handler;
after THEN/ELSE, EXPLAIN (...) and PREPARE p AS;
in CREATE TASK ... AS TRUNCATE t and in a single-statement routine body;
in ALTER TABLE ... TRUNCATE [SUB]PARTITION;
with quoted, dotted, db..t or IF EXISTS targets, and with NOWAIT/WAIT n.
A column named truncate stays a read when what follows it is a clause word, an operator, , or ), or when it is qualified (t.truncate).
DROP CATALOG, DROP NAMESPACE, DROP EXTERNAL SCHEMA and DROP PLUGGABLE DATABASE are blocked.
Regressions from #1609 fixed here. Each of these refused a valid read:
A column or alias named truncate, which was hard-blocked.
SELECT 1 AS throw on SQL Server.
A column named nextval.
Two consistency fixes:
data_diff reads an empty target_warehouse as the source warehouse in both layers.
The omitted-warehouse dbt dialect check follows the dbt adapter the daemon has already created.
Known limits (each refuses rather than lets through):
A write whose literal mentions DROP followed by DATABASE/SCHEMA/CATALOG/NAMESPACE, or the word TRUNCATE, is refused even with --allow-write. Example: INSERT INTO audit VALUES ('TRUNCATE').
Privilege and trigger names (GRANT TRUNCATE, BEFORE TRUNCATE) are refused.
PostgreSQL literals ending in a backslash are refused, since standard_conforming_strings may be off.
Oracle q'...' quotes are refused.
ClickHouse jdbc(...) is a write, so reads through it need --allow-write.
A table or column named truncate followed by a word other than a clause word or operator is refused (SELECT truncate x, FROM truncate t). A TRUNCATE target that is itself one of those clause words (TRUNCATE nulls) is not caught.
Follow-up, pre-existing on main: a ClickHouse quoted identifier ending in a backslash can hide a second statement from the classifier. The ClickHouse driver sends one statement per request, so that statement does not run.
Out of scope, a follow-up: enforcing the DROP/TRUNCATE block in the database, through a restricted role or a read-only transaction where the driver supports one. That would cover statements built at run time, which no text check can see.
How did you verify your code works?
bun run typecheck is clean.
bun test test/altimate/tools test/altimate/tool-cli test/altimate/native test/altimate/sql-validation-adversarial.test.ts test/altimate/sql-query-deadline.test.ts test/altimate/dbt-first-execution.test.ts: 1841 pass, 0 fail.
Each case above has a test:
classifier cases per dialect in sql-classify.test.ts;
runner tests for sql_explain with a fake connector, which receives nothing;
sql_execute tests for dbt Jinja (including a MongoDB default) in sql-comment-safety.test.ts.
Large crafted inputs stay linear, with timing tests, including 400 KB of whitespace in classified SQL and 200 KB after ( in sql_explain.
The review fixes went through independent codex and claude reviews until claude approved and codex had no blocking findings.
The changes went through repeated independent reviews (codex and claude).
Manual end to end against a local DuckDB warehouse, on a copy of the database:
Hardens SQL classification for the tool CLI and MCP server so destructive statements are refused before they run, and valid reads stop getting blocked. The hard block on DROP DATABASE / DROP SCHEMA / TRUNCATE now covers more forms but is documented as best effort, since it reads SQL text: for a hard guarantee, connect with a database user lacking those privileges.
Bug Fixes
sql_explain now explains a single statement per call and refuses EXPLAIN options in its input, since some drivers run every statement after the prefix and EXPLAIN ANALYZE executes the statement.
Refuses more writes that ran as reads: Snowflake ->> chains, dbt Jinja anywhere in the SQL on the dbt route, Spark/Hive TRANSFORM ... USING, and functions that write or call external systems (ClickHouse jdbc, Spark reflect/java_method, Databricks http_request/remote_query, DuckDB bigquery_execute/ducklake_*/postgres_attach/sqlite_attach, Snowflake GETNEXTVAL). Reads through ClickHouse jdbc(...) now need --allow-write.
Sequence advances through quoted or commented NEXTVAL in Oracle, Snowflake, and MariaDB count as writes.
SQL whose text cannot be read with certainty is refused rather than read: a quote inside a Spark/MySQL /*+ hint, Oracle q'...' quotes, and /* inside a comment where nesting is unknown.
The hard block reads a write's literals as SQL with escapes decoded per engine, and finds TRUNCATE at statement, block, and handler starts, after THEN/ELSE with quoted, dotted, and IF EXISTS targets and NOWAIT/WAIT, and in task and routine bodies and ALTER TABLE ... TRUNCATE PARTITION. ClickHouse $tag$...$tag$ heredocs are lexed as strings. DROP CATALOG, DROP NAMESPACE, DROP EXTERNAL SCHEMA, and DROP PLUGGABLE DATABASE are blocked too.
Columns or aliases named truncate, throw, and nextval, and CASE ... THEN truncate, are reads again.
data_diff reads an empty target_warehouse as the source warehouse; the omitted-warehouse dbt dialect check follows the adapter the daemon already created.
Written for commit 6b5b356. Summary will update on new commits.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
SQL execution supports ordered batches of up to eight labeled queries, optional warehouse selection, and reuse of earlier results. Failed steps are reported individually, and later steps continue.
dbt adapter types can be identified from project profiles and compiled metadata.
Bug Fixes
Expanded SQL safety checks across dialects, including additional destructive statements, side-effecting functions, and potentially unsafe query patterns. SQL safety checks are best-effort; use a database account without DROP or TRUNCATE privileges for stronger protection.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The changes add dbt adapter-type discovery, expand dialect-aware SQL tokenization and classification, and add ordered batch execution to sql_execute. They also update warehouse-aware checks in data_diff and sql_explain, add related tests, and document SQL safety limitations.

Summary
dbt adapter and target discovery packages/opencode/src/altimate/native/connections/dbt-adapter-type.ts, packages/opencode/test/altimate/native/dbt-adapter-type.test.ts
The dbt helper resolves project roots and reads adapter types from profiles and manifests. Tests cover routing, fallback, profile parsing, and manifest caching.
The tokenizer adds dialect-specific comment, string, identifier, and dollar-quote handling. It marks ambiguous input incomplete. Related tests adjust ClickHouse delimiter coverage.
SQL classification and hard-deny checks packages/opencode/src/altimate/tools/sql-classify.ts, packages/opencode/src/altimate/tools/sql-function-policy.ts, packages/opencode/test/altimate/tools/sql-classify.test.ts, packages/opencode/test/altimate/sql-validation-adversarial.test.ts, docs/docs/usage/tool.md
The classifier expands hard-deny detection and adds dialect-aware checks for quoted SQL, truncation, statement chains, sequence advancement, and command forms. Tests cover dialect-specific and adversarial inputs. The documentation describes limitations of SQL-text checks and database privilege guidance.
Warehouse-aware SQL and batch execution packages/opencode/src/altimate/tools/sql-execute.ts, packages/opencode/test/altimate/tools/sql-comment-safety.test.ts
sql_execute supports ordered query batches, candidate-dialect classification, prior-step references, and bounded results. It adds spill and scratch-table handling. Tests cover dbt-routed SQL inputs.
Data-diff and explain validation packages/opencode/src/altimate/tools/data-diff.ts, packages/opencode/src/altimate/tools/sql-explain.ts, packages/opencode/test/altimate/tools/sql-explain.test.ts, packages/opencode/test/altimate/tool-cli/runner.test.ts
data_diff resolves warehouses and checks SQL before requesting permission. sql_explain validates statement count and destructive operations for all requests. Tests cover these checks and empty target handling.

AltimateAI/altimate-code#1648: The PR changes SQL read classification and distinguishes statement-form TRUNCATE from identifier uses, which overlaps with the issue’s classifier concerns.
Merging still leaves a narrow destructive-SQL bypass and dialect-dependent batch failures, alongside previously reported unresolved issues. These should be addressed or explicitly accepted before merge.

The classifySql function (called just above) already executes tokenizeSql(sql, dialect) internally. Calling it again here for write queries introduces unnecessary CPU overhead and latency, especially for large SQL statements.
Consider modifying classifySql to return the lexical analysis result along with its classification so that you can reuse it here without redundant processing.
[🟠 MEDIUM]Potential Regression in THROW Statement Matching
The regular expression for THROW was updated from \\bTHROW\\s*($|;|[\\d@]) to \\bTHROW\\s+[\\d@].
This change drops support for matching a bare THROW; statement or THROW at the end of a script (often used to re-throw exceptions in CATCH blocks). This could cause valid control-flow or write scripts in T-SQL to be misclassified as read-only.
Please verify if bare THROW statements are still supported or if the regex needs to be reverted to include ($|;|[\\d@]).
[🟠 MEDIUM]High Complexity and Maintainability Risk
The CODE_HARD_DENY (and BATCH_STATEMENT) regular expressions have become extremely long strings constructed via concatenation and contain dense assertions (like negative lookaheads).
This approach makes them:
Hard to read and maintain for other developers.
Prone to escaping errors.
Vulnerable to Regular Expression Denial of Service (ReDoS) issues if backtracking behaves unexpectedly with complex SQL inputs.
Consider breaking these regex patterns down into smaller, well-named, and independently tested segments, or replace some of this logic with structural AST checks where possible. Make sure there is extensive unit testing for the edge cases introduced here.

Consensus review (5 models), changes requested. Reviewed 13c911c against tool-cli-daemon (ee6add5), diff only. The head was re-checked before posting and is unchanged.
Nearly every claim in the description is implemented and tested. I verified each one against classifyAndCheck at head and at base. 407/407 tests pass in the touched files, and hostile inputs up to 200 KB classify in ≤111 ms. Two things block the merge:
MAJOR: an existing test, sql-validation-adversarial.test.ts:116 ("TRUNCATE inside string literal is not blocked"), fails at this head. It is the only failure that is new in the full suite (10646 pass / 1 fail).
MAJOR: the TRUNCATE hard block covers fewer forms than at the base: a Snowflake CREATE TASK … AS TRUNCATE t, a MySQL single-statement procedure body, Postgres BEGIN ATOMIC TRUNCATE, and ALTER TABLE … TRUNCATE PARTITION. This regresses the path the PR changes.
Minors, neither blocking: the TRANSFORM + USING false refusal on Databricks reads (fails closed), and the missing data_difftarget_warehouse: "" test (test-only).
Nits, the status of the #1609 minors, and rejected panel claims are in a separate PR comment.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
MAJOR: an existing test now fails. This new literal check blocks INSERT INTO logs VALUES ('TRUNCATE TABLE users happened') (blocked=true). test/altimate/sql-validation-adversarial.test.ts:116-120 ("TRUNCATE inside string literal is not blocked") still asserts blocked: false. That file passes at the base (73/73) and fails at this head (72 pass / 1 fail). A full bun test test/altimate run at head gives 10646 pass / 1 fail, and this is the only failure that is new at head. This stacked PR's checks run no test job, so nothing flags it.
Fix: change the expectation to blocked: true with a note that it is the accepted "literals mentioning TRUNCATE in writes" limit, or move the case into the new table in sql-classify.test.ts.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 6b5b356. The test now expects blocked: true for INSERT INTO logs VALUES ('TRUNCATE TABLE users happened'), with a note that this is the accepted limit: a write's literals are read as SQL, so a write whose literal names TRUNCATE is refused even with --allow-write. sql-validation-adversarial.test.ts passes, and the run on the touched files is 1841 pass, 0 fail.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
MAJOR: TRUNCATE without TABLE is no longer hard-blocked in positions the base blocked. The base matched \bTRUNCATE\b(?!\s*\() anywhere in code. This head matches TRUNCATE only as TRUNCATE TABLE, after ^/;/PREPARE … AS/EXPLAIN (…), after the block words on this line, or after THEN/ELSE. Each of these is blocked at the base and write, blocked=false here, so it runs with --allow-write:
Snowflake: CREATE TASK k AS TRUNCATE t and CREATE OR REPLACE TASK k WAREHOUSE = w AS TRUNCATE t
MySQL: CREATE PROCEDURE p() TRUNCATE t and CREATE PROCEDURE p() SQL SECURITY INVOKER TRUNCATE t. A single-statement routine body; MySQL procedures allow TRUNCATE.
Postgres: CREATE PROCEDURE p() LANGUAGE sql BEGIN ATOMIC TRUNCATE t; END; CALL p(). NOT ATOMIC is listed, but in BEGIN ATOMIC the word ATOMIC sits before TRUNCATE.
Oracle, MySQL and Databricks: ALTER TABLE t TRUNCATE PARTITION p. Oracle also: ALTER TABLE t TRUNCATE SUBPARTITION p.
The PR says the block "finds TRUNCATE in more positions"; for these forms it finds fewer. The same PR also starts blocking literal routine bodies (CREATE FUNCTION … AS 'TRUNCATE t'), so plain-text bodies are now the weaker side.
Suggested fix: apply the "a target must follow" rule after any preceding token except .: \bTRUNCATE\s+(?!(FROM|AS|WHERE|ORDER|GROUP|HAVING|UNION|LIMIT|WINDOW|INTO|JOIN|ON|AND|OR|END)\b)[\w"$\u0080-\uffff]With that ruleSELECT truncate FROM t, ORDER BY truncateandAS truncate, stay reads, whileAS TRUNCATE t, ) TRUNCATE t, ATOMIC TRUNCATE tandTRUNCATE PARTITION p` are blocked. Please add a test for each form.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 6b5b356. TRUNCATE followed by a target is now a statement wherever it sits, so these are blocked again, each with a test:
CREATE [OR REPLACE] TASK k ... AS TRUNCATE t
CREATE PROCEDURE p() [SQL SECURITY INVOKER] TRUNCATE t
BEGIN ATOMIC TRUNCATE t
ALTER TABLE t TRUNCATE [SUB]PARTITION p, on Oracle, MySQL and Databricks
A column named truncate stays a read when what follows it is a clause word, an operator, , or ), or when it is qualified, including with a comment between, as in t./*c*/truncate. That covers FROM, ORDER BY ... DESC, ISNULL, window frames (ROWS/RANGE), WITH ROLLUP, SETTINGS, OPERATOR(...) and ASCENDING.
The qualified-name check runs only after TRUNCATE has matched, so classification stays linear; there are timing tests on 400 KB inputs.
Two limits are documented in the description. A name truncate followed by any other word is refused, for example an alias without AS (SELECT truncate x, FROM truncate t). A target that is itself one of those clause words (TRUNCATE nulls) is not caught.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
MINOR: this refuses ordinary Databricks/Spark reads. The rule fires when TRANSFORM( and USING both appear anywhere in the statement. SELECT transform(arr, x -> x + 1) FROM t JOIN u USING (id) (databricks/spark) is a read at the base and a write here. The higher-order transform() and JOIN … USING (col) are both common.
Fix: require the script form, i.e. USING followed by a string-literal token after the TRANSFORM(...) clause. Add the JOIN … USING query as a read test. (MAP … USING 'cmd' and REDUCE … USING 'cmd' are already writes, because the parser rejects them.)
Blocker: no. It fails closed with the write prompt and needs both constructs in one query.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 6b5b356. TRANSFORM(...) is a write only when it has a USING that is not followed by (, checked with comments and literals masked. SELECT transform(arr, x -> x + 1) FROM t JOIN u USING (id) is a read again. USING 'cmd', USING /*c*/ 'cmd' and USING "cmd" stay writes. Tests cover all four.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
MINOR (test gap): no test covers target_warehouse: "". The change is correct: the native layer uses target_warehouse ?? source_warehouse, so "" used to reach the handler as a warehouse name rather than meaning the source. A test that passes target_warehouse: "" and checks the dispatched params (and that the ask names the source warehouse) would lock this in.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Added in 6b5b356: a runner test passes target_warehouse: "" and checks that the dispatched data.diff params carry the source warehouse and no target_warehouse. The ask resolves target_warehouse || source_warehouse. No test checks the ask with "" yet, so the test is named for what it does check: the dispatch.
Consensus review: nits, the status of the #1609 minors, and rejected claims. These go with review 5757071956 on 13c911c.
Nits (none block the merge)
sql-explain.ts:104: ^\( also refuses a parenthesized query, such as (SELECT 1) or (SELECT …) UNION (SELECT …). It fails closed. Matching only option words would avoid this: ^\(\s*(ANALY[SZ]E|VERBOSE|COSTS|BUFFERS|FORMAT|SETTINGS|WAL|TIMING|SUMMARY|GENERIC_PLAN|MEMORY|SERIALIZE)\b.
On the mysql dialect, SELECT t.nextval FROM t (a qualified column) is still a write, because of MariaDB's Oracle mode. It fails closed.
quotedHardDeny blocks any write whose code contains the word UESCAPE, even when there is no U& literal (sql-classify.ts:294). It fails closed.
The new side-effect function names (jdbc, reflect, java_method, remote_query, …) apply in every dialect, so a UDF with one of these names on another engine reads as a write. It fails closed.
When the text contains U&, escapeReadings decodes \HHHH across the whole literal, not just inside U&'…'. This can only add blocks to writes.
ClickHouse quoted identifiers hiding a second statement
Not fixed. At this head, SELECT 1 AS `a\ ; DELETE FROM t; -- `` andSELECT 1 AS "a"" ; DROP DATABASE x; -- "` still classify as a single read, the same as at the base. The driver still sends one statement per request.
Bare sp_executesql N'DROP DATABASE …' getting past the block under --allow-write
Fixed. It is now blocked, with a test.
Postgres strings ending in \ refused
Unchanged. This is an accepted limit. Postgres "a\" identifiers now read correctly.
Docs saying the block holds "even with --allow-write"
Fixed.tool.md now describes the block as best effort.
Checked and fine
sql_explain explains one statement only. It refuses EXPLAIN/ANALYZE/VERBOSE/(…) prefixes, also after a leading comment, and refuses blocked SQL. It resolves the dialect the same way the handler does (warehouses[0], with no dbt route).
The newly listed writes are now writes, each tested: Snowflake ->>, dbt Jinja in a comment or literal ({{ ref() }} was already a write at the base, so no new refusal), TRANSFORM … USING, the new function list, and .NEXTVAL including quoted and comment-split forms.
Uncertain lexing is refused: /*+ hints with quotes, and Oracle q'. ClickHouse heredocs take the text up to the next $ as the tag, which matches ClickHouse's lexer. Spark -- ending in a backslash and /* with unknown nesting were already handled at the base.
Dynamic-SQL literals have their escapes decoded, and DROP CATALOG / NAMESPACE / EXTERNAL SCHEMA / PLUGGABLE DATABASE are blocked. Statements built by concatenation still get through, as documented.
Reads of truncate, throw and nextval columns are fixed. The dbt adapter-root change fails safe.
Cost: hostile inputs of 200 KB each classified in 111 ms or less. No quadratic paths were found.
Panel claims rejected after checking
"A backslash-newline in code splits DROP/DATABASE past the block": no engine joins lines in code. SQL Server's \ line continuation applies only to string constants, and the parser already fails such code closed.
"sql_explain checks a different dialect than it executes on": the handler also uses warehouses[0].
"The ClickHouse identifier item is fixed" and "the TRUNCATE regression is false": both reproduced as stated above.
"Jinja-like text in JSON literals on the dbt route is a false refusal": dbt renders Jinja inside literals too, so treating it as a write is correct.
Regex backtracking in the THEN/ELSE rule: measured, and it scales linearly.
Bound the explicit-schema table listing before it loads every table.
When a driver has no catalog SQL, listSchemaTables loads all tables with connector.listTables(schema) and slices to 500 afterward. The Oracle, SQL Server, Databricks, and ClickHouse listings have no row limit, and this call has no query timeout. Large catalogs can exhaust memory or stall the request. Bound the listing in the driver or in the query.

Assert the ANALYZE message for single-statement write inputs.
The regex accepts the statement-count message for every loop input. For INSERT, DELETE, and CREATE TABLE, the statement-count branch does not apply. Extend the conjunction check to rows commits without asked.
When asked is omitted on a rows commit, conjunctionRejection finds no item names and returns early. The one-time conjunction warning and the coverage check are both skipped. A fallback to rows.columns would give these commits the same check that rows commits with asked already receive. This change also needs the caller to pass the rows column names and the rejection message to describe rows columns. Remove the MCP basis slice. It blanks over-long bases before the native trim runs.

Stop doubling backslashes in the inline MySQL schema literal.
stringLiteral doubles backslashes. Under NO_BACKSLASH_ESCAPES, MySQL reads \\ as two characters. A schema named a\b then fails the t.table_schema match, and the listing returns no tables. Build the MySQL schema filter so its value does not depend on sql_mode, for example with a hex-encoded literal, or pass the schema as a driver bind that the MySQL driver honors.

Propagate credential lookup failures instead of treating them as "not bound."
nameIsBoundAnywhere converts a failed hasStoredCredentials lookup into false. The forced read-only branch then allows the add. The fail-closed rule documented at warehouse-add.ts:72-73 requires refusal when a lookup fails. The inline comment on lines 229-230 assumes that a failed read also means a failed write. The code does not check that assumption.
If the add proceeds, two outcomes are possible:
A sensitive field supplied by the add can replace an existing stored value, if the store accepts the write.
A sensitive field omitted by the add can reuse a previously stored value once a later read succeeds.
Let the lookup error reach the forced read-only branch, which already refuses when nameIsBoundAnywhere throws. Check the other callers of nameIsBoundAnywhere before changing its error behavior.

cli() creates a tool-cli- directory on every call and never removes it. Repeated runs of this suite leave those directories behind, and the DuckDB files that the connection tests create in them stay on the host. The file's other fixtures use the same pattern. Use the linked worktree root as the config discovery boundary.
For a linked worktree, projectWorktree returns the main checkout root. Config discovery then uses that root as its stop value. The main checkout is not an ancestor of the linked worktree, so the upward walk never stops and reads config files above the worktree. Those files can change the MCP output limits. If the linked worktree is nested inside the main checkout, discovery stops at the main root instead, and the files between the two roots are read.
The agent uses the sandbox directory, which contains .git, as its worktree boundary. This helper should use the same value. The git common-directory lookup is then unnecessary.

Open CLAUDE.md with O_NOFOLLOW for the read and the write.
The lstatSync check on line 40 and the writeFile on line 44 are separate operations. readFile on line 41 and writeFile on line 44 both follow symlinks. If another process replaces CLAUDE.md with a symlink after line 40, the routing block is written to the symlink target. That target can be outside the project. The guarantee in the doc comment does not hold against this race.
Checking the opened file with fstat does not close the gap. An open that follows a symlink returns the target, so fstat cannot detect the redirect. A write-mode open can also truncate the target before any check runs.
Open the file once with O_NOFOLLOW, then read and write through that handle. If the final path component is a symlink, the open fails with ELOOP. Catch that error and return false, which keeps the current behavior for symlinked files.
On platforms without fs.constants.O_NOFOLLOW, such as Windows, the open cannot reject a symlink. Choose an explicit fallback for those platforms, and document it.

Accept ClickHouse backslash escapes in double-quoted identifiers.
The quote loop applies backslash escapes only to BigQuery quoted forms and to Redshift single quotes. A ClickHouse double-quoted identifier that contains an escaped quote is therefore cut short. For example, SELECT "a\"b;c" FROM t leaves an unclosed " at the end. The lexer marks the input incomplete, so classification falls back to a write with a parse error. A valid read is then treated as a write.
ClickHouse's lexer grammar treats \ as an escape inside double-quoted identifiers. Allow that escape for the clickhouse dialect:

Symlinks swapped in after copyTree checks an entry can be copied from outside the snapshot.
copyTree reads each entry's type from fs.readdir and skips symbolic links at that point. The entry is used later. A file goes through fs.copyFile(src, dst). A directory goes through the recursive copyTree(src, dst), which calls fs.readdir(src). A process that can replace the source entry during the sync can swap in a symbolic link. The awaits on earlier entries leave that window open. The copy then follows the link and places the target's content in .claude/skills, which Claude Code reads.
Do not treat fs.writeFile(dst, await readNoFollow(src)) as the fix:
fs.writeFile creates dst with mode 0o666, subject to umask. Source executable bits are lost. fs.copyFile keeps them.
readNoFollow depends on O_NOFOLLOW. Windows does not provide it, so the race stays open there.
The change covers files only. A directory swapped to a symbolic link is still traversed by the recursive call.
A correct fix must check each source with a no-follow open at the point of use, copy from that handle, preserve the source mode, and handle directories in the same way. Any remaining Windows limit must be stated in the code or documentation.

WARNING: This guard counts non-empty statements, so a leading ; still sends a second statement to the warehouse
statementsOf("; DELETE FROM t") returns ["DELETE FROM t"] - the empty leading segment is dropped - so statements.length === 1 and option is false. The tool then dispatches EXPLAIN ; DELETE FROM t (register.ts prefixes the plan to params.sql verbatim), which is exactly the multi-statement text this check exists to prevent. It only stays harmless while the driver aborts on the invalid bare EXPLAIN; the guard itself no longer proves that only one statement is in the wire text. SUGGESTION:ducklake_\w+ also classifies DuckLake's read-only metadata helpers as writes
The wildcard matches every ducklake_* call, not only the mutating ones, so catalog inspection such as SELECT * FROM ducklake_snapshots('lake') or ducklake_list_files(...) now needs --allow-write (this list also gates nested SQL). Enumerating the mutating entry points (ducklake_expire_snapshots, ducklake_cleanup_old_files, ...) instead of the whole namespace would keep read-only DuckLake inspection available.
The one-statement guard counts non-empty statements, so sql: "; DELETE FROM t" still passes: statementsOf drops the empty leading segment, statements.length === 1, and EXPLAIN ; DELETE FROM t is sent to the warehouse - the multi-statement wire text this check exists to prevent. Reject input whose first ;-segment is empty, or count separators instead of non-empty statements. Still present at baccd4824.
ducklake_\w+ marks every DuckLake call as a write, including read-only catalog helpers such as ducklake_snapshots(...)/ducklake_list_files(...), so those reads now require --allow-write (this list also gates nested SQL). Enumerating the mutating entry points would keep read-only DuckLake inspection available. Still present at baccd4824.

Incremental range 298a3118..baccd4824 changes only the crafted-input timing test. Splitting one aggregate 2 s assertion into a per-input 2 s assertion loosens the total budget but tightens detection of a single slow input, and a quadratic regression in any one case still blows its own budget by orders of magnitude. No new defects found on the changed lines; both previously reported findings remain reproduced in current code and already have active inline comments at this HEAD.

Verified the incremental changes at 298a3118 (TRUNCATE-anywhere hard deny and its clause-word exclusions, the qualified-name lookbehind, TRANSFORM ... The EXPLAIN option regex permits a leading ( only when a query keyword follows, and no EXPLAIN option is named SELECT/WITH/VALUES/TABLE/FROM, so the ANALYZE-execution risk is not reopened (failing closed for ("analyze")). No new defects found on the changed lines.
The new one-statement guard counts non-empty statements, so sql: "; DELETE FROM t" passes the check and dispatches EXPLAIN ; DELETE FROM t to the warehouse - a second statement in the text the guard exists to keep single-statement.

Replying to the nits and notes. The changes are in 6b5b356, and the PR is now one commit on main.
Nits
sql_explain and a leading (: fixed. A leading ( is refused only when no query keyword (SELECT, WITH, VALUES, TABLE, FROM) follows it. So (SELECT 1) UNION (SELECT 2) is explained, while (ANALYZE) DELETE and the quoted ("analyze") DELETE are refused. The check is linear, with a timing test on 200 KB of whitespace.
UESCAPE without a U& literal: fixed. It counts only with an actual U&'...' literal. UPDATE t SET uescape = 1 and ... = menu&1 are plain writes.
t.nextval on mysql: kept. It fails closed, because MariaDB's Oracle mode reads s.nextval as a sequence advance.
The new side-effect names in every dialect: kept. It fails closed, and a UDF with one of those names is rare.
U& decoding across the whole literal: kept. It can only add blocks to a write.
ClickHouse quoted identifiers hiding a second statement: not changed here. The ClickHouse driver sends one statement per request, so the second statement cannot run. It is listed as a follow-up in the PR description.
The rest: as you note.
Thanks for the rejected-claims list. It matches what I see.

Remove the MySQL false positive for qualified NEXTVAL reads without weakening MariaDB gating.
advancesSequence returns true for alias.NEXTVAL when the dialect is mysql. MySQL has no sequence objects, so SELECT seq.NEXTVAL FROM t seq reads a column. The statement is classified as a write. The execute path can then ask for sql_execute_write approval, or refuse the statement when forceReadOnly is set.
Do not remove mysql from this list. canonicalType returns "mysql" for MariaDB connections too. Removing it would also stop gating NEXTVAL for MariaDB, where the code comment lists Oracle-mode sequence advances. A fix must keep that MariaDB case fail-closed while allowing MySQL reads. Documenting the entry does not change the classification.

Assert the classification results in the large-input timing loop.
The loop discards the value returned by classifyAndCheck. A changed queryType or blocked value passes the test while the call stays under 2 seconds. Several of these inputs use the TRUNCATE and EXPLAIN paths, so a regression in those paths is not caught. Store each result and assert both fields, as the table-driven test does.

Consensus re-review at baccd48: changes requested for one blocking finding. The earlier items are mostly closed: the adversarial test is fixed, the transform + JOIN ... USING false refusal is fixed, and the data_diff dispatch test is added. The earlier TRUNCATE finding is only partly fixed: the listed forms are blocked again, but TRUNCATE of a table named with an ordinary non-reserved word on the new exclusion list still gets past the block outside statement start (inline, MAJOR).
The three inline MINORs do not block: try_reflect/executable (pre-existing, follow-up), ClickHouse clause hiding (pre-existing, follow-up), and -- in a Spark hint (edge input, pre-existing).
Full bun test test/altimate: 10674 pass, 0 fail here; 10531 pass, 0 fail at the base (2d59604). Details and nits are in the PR comment that follows.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
MAJOR: this exclusion list lets a real TRUNCATE through when its target is an ordinary non-reserved word. This is what remains of the earlier TRUNCATE finding. The forms listed then are now blocked, but each of these is blocked at the base and write, blocked=false here, so it runs with --allow-write:
postgres: CREATE PROCEDURE p() LANGUAGE sql BEGIN ATOMIC TRUNCATE settings; END; CALL p() (also groups)
snowflake: CREATE TASK k AS TRUNCATE groups; EXECUTE TASK k (also settings, filter)
Statement-start and quoted forms stay blocked (TRUNCATE settings, TRUNCATE "settings"). The list mixes words that cannot be unquoted table names (FROM, WHERE) with words that are ordinary table names (SETTINGS, GROUPS, ROWS, RANGE, START, FILTER, MATCH, AT, ESCAPE, NULLS). The description lists this as a known limit, but with TRUNCATE nulls, which is blocked at statement start, and it does not read as covering names this common.
It stays blocking because it weakens the hard block on the path this PR changes, compared with the base, and it can be fixed without losing the read cases.
Suggested fix: keep the bare exclusion for reserved clause words. For the non-reserved ones, also require the token that makes them a clause: SETTINGS\s+\w+\s*=, (ROWS|RANGE|GROUPS)\s+(BETWEEN|UNBOUNDED|CURRENT|\d), START\s+WITH, FILTER\s*\(, AT\s+(TIME|LOCAL), NULLS\s+(FIRST|LAST), MATCH\s*\(.
Please add the three inputs above as blocked: true. The existing read tests should keep passing.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
MINOR: try_reflect is still a read on Spark and Databricks.SELECT try_reflect('java.lang.System','getProperty','java.home') is read at the base and here. The function is in Spark 4.0.5's function registry and does what reflect does, which this line makes a write. ClickHouse SELECT * FROM executable('x.sh', TSV, 'a Int'), which runs a server-side script, is also still a read, in the same "call outside" class as jdbc.
Fix: add try_reflect and executable, each with a test.
Blocker: no. Pre-existing on the base, and safe to do in a follow-up.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
MINOR: ClickHouse lexing gaps can hide a clause of the same statement. ClickHouse's quotedString (src/Parsers/Lexer.cpp) honours \ in backtick and double-quoted identifiers, and it also lexes Unicode quotes as strings. Each of these is a single read here and at the base, though ClickHouse sees the jdbc(...) call this PR makes a write:
SELECT1AS`a\``FROM jdbc('x','y') -- `SELECT1AS"a\"" FROM jdbc('x','y') -- "SELECT ‘'’ AS a FROM jdbc(‘x’,‘y’) WHERE 1 = ‘'’
The doubled closing quote matters: with a single one (`a\`) the SQL is a write. Your reply is right about a hidden second statement: the driver makes one call per execute, and ClickHouse rejects multi-statements. That deferral is reasonable, but it does not cover these.
Fix: on clickhouse, mark the SQL uncertain when a backtick or double-quoted identifier holds a backslash, or when the text holds a Unicode quote.
Blocker: no. Pre-existing on the base, and safe to do in the follow-up the description already lists, if that follow-up is widened to cover this.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
MINOR: -- in a hint body moves the end of the hint, just as a quote does. The reasoning on line 89 applies to line comments too. On spark, this classifies as read here, with no quote for this check to find:
SELECT/*+ X -- /**/ reflect(a, b) AS v -- */
Spark 4.0.5's parser (CatalystSqlParser.parsePlan, run directly) returns Project [reflect(a, b) AS v] under hint X, while this lexer treats the whole span as a comment. A real call needs foldable strings built without quotes, for example with chr().
Fix: also mark the hint uncertain when its body holds -- or a nested /*.
Blocker: no. Edge input, pre-existing on the base, and safe to do in a follow-up.

Adversarial test "TRUNCATE inside string literal"
Fixed. It now asserts blocked: true, and the file passes.
TRUNCATE without TABLE, blocked in fewer places than base
Partly fixed.CREATE TASK k AS TRUNCATE t, CREATE PROCEDURE p() TRUNCATE t, BEGIN ATOMIC TRUNCATE t and ALTER TABLE t TRUNCATE [SUB]PARTITION p are blocked, with tests. A target named with a non-reserved word on the exclusion list is not (inline MAJOR).
transform(arr, ...) with JOIN ... USING (id)
Fixed. Read here, with a test. USING 'cmd', USING /*c*/ 'cmd' and USING "cmd" stay writes.
data_diff with an empty target_warehouse
Fixed for dispatch. The ask is not asserted, as your reply says.
ClickHouse quoted identifiers hiding a second statement
Reasonably deferred for a second statement. The same gap can hide a clause of the same statement (inline MINOR).
(SELECT 1) in sql_explain
Fixed.
UESCAPE without a U& literal
Fixed.
t.nextval on mysql, function names in every dialect, U& decoding across a literal
Kept, and reasonable. Each fails closed.
Test runs
Full bun test test/altimate: 10674 pass, 0 fail at baccd48; 10531 pass, 0 fail at 2d59604. No failures at either, so none is new.
Nits (none block)
INSERT INTO t VALUES (U&'hello' UESCAPE '!') is hard-blocked, which is new against the base. A code comment says so, but the description's known limits do not.
sql_explain refuses a parenthesized query starting with another keyword, such as (PIVOT t ON x) on DuckDB. It fails closed.
sql_explain answers "Only a single statement can be explained" for SQL that lexes as uncertain, such as SELECT 'a\' on postgres. The message is misleading.
The known-limits line TRUNCATE nulls should describe the position that is missed: TRUNCATE nulls at statement start is blocked.
No test asserts the data_diff ask with an empty target_warehouse.
Checked and fine
sql_explain refuses (SELECT 1); DELETE FROM t (two statements), (ANALYZE) DELETE and ("analyze") DELETE. (VALUES, ANALYZE) DELETE passes the check, but VALUES is not an EXPLAIN option, so PostgreSQL and DuckDB should reject the option list before executing. This was not run on those engines.
TRUNCATE ONLY t, TRUNCATE ON t and ALTER TABLE t TRUNCATE PARTITION (p) are blocked.
Cost: 26 hostile inputs of 240-500 KB each took at most 463 ms. The lookbehind is linear.
Column and alias reads of truncate, throw and nextval are correct.
Rejected claims
"Snowflake ->> is a false refusal": rejected. Snowflake documents ->> as its flow operator, which chains statements.
"SELECT 1 followed by TRUNCATE settings runs on SQL Server": rejected. T-SQL requires TRUNCATE TABLE, which is blocked.
"TRUNCATE left shows the exclusion gap": rejected as evidence. LEFT is reserved, and the quoted form is blocked.
"TRANSFORM(arr) USING "script.sh" is a read": rejected. It is a write on spark, databricks and no dialect.
"TRANSFORM(a) USING(expr) is a bypass": rejected. Spark's grammar requires a string literal there.

Approved at baccd482, with comments. Please pick these up in a follow-up. The inline comments on the previous review (5775096630) still apply.
Not blocking, but still open:
TRUNCATE gap (sql-classify.ts:271): the hard block misses TRUNCATE when the table is named with a non-reserved word on the new exclusion list, for example CREATE TASK k AS TRUNCATE groups; EXECUTE TASK k or ... BEGIN ATOMIC TRUNCATE settings; END; CALL p(). Base blocks these. It's approved because it needs --allow-write, TRUNCATE inside a statement body, and one of those table names, and the block is documented as best effort. This is the first thing to fix in the follow-up.
Spark try_reflect and ClickHouse executable still read as reads. Pre-existing.
ClickHouse backslash and Unicode quoting can hide a jdbc(...) clause in the same statement. Pre-existing.
Spark hints:-- inside a hint moves where the hint ends, so reflect(...) reads as a read. Edge input, pre-existing.
Refuses more writes that would run as reads, and blocks more ways of writing DROP DATABASE,
DROP SCHEMA or TRUNCATE.
- sql_explain explains one statement and refuses EXPLAIN options in its input (ANALYZE, VERBOSE,
an option list), since some drivers run every statement after EXPLAIN and EXPLAIN ANALYZE
executes it; a parenthesized query is still explained.
- Writes that ran as reads: Snowflake ->> statement chains; dbt Jinja anywhere in the SQL on the dbt
route; Spark TRANSFORM ... USING <script>; functions that write or call outside systems (ClickHouse
jdbc, Spark reflect/java_method, Databricks http_request/remote_query, DuckDB bigquery_execute,
ducklake_*, postgres_attach/sqlite_attach, Snowflake GETNEXTVAL); sequence advances through a
quoted or commented NEXTVAL in Oracle, Snowflake and MariaDB.
- Lexing: Spark and MySQL /*+ hints holding a quote and Oracle q'...' quotes are uncertain;
ClickHouse heredocs are strings.
- Hard block (best effort, now documented as such): a write's literals are read as SQL with escapes
decoded as each engine reads them; TRUNCATE followed by a target is found wherever it sits
(statement, block or handler start, THEN/ELSE, CREATE TASK ... AS, routine bodies, BEGIN ATOMIC,
ALTER TABLE ... TRUNCATE PARTITION); DROP CATALOG, DROP NAMESPACE, DROP EXTERNAL SCHEMA and DROP
PLUGGABLE DATABASE are blocked.
- Columns named truncate, throw or nextval, and CASE ... THEN truncate, read as columns again.
- data_diff reads an empty target_warehouse as the source warehouse in both layers; the dbt dialect
check follows the dbt adapter the daemon has already created.

Format batch step references with the dialect the dbt route executes.
In a dbt project, a batch step with no warehouse runs through the dbt adapter first. resolveStepRefs still formats prior-step column values with Registry.getConfig(warehouse)?.type, which is the registry's first warehouse. The adapter does not receive a dialect, and the two dialects can differ. Literals that the registry dialect escapes differently from the dbt dialect can then produce these results:
With a registry warehouse in BACKSLASH_ESCAPE_TYPES (for example clickhouse) and a DuckDB or Postgres dbt target, a prior value C:\temp becomes 'C:\\temp'. The dbt dialect reads two backslashes, so a filter on that value matches no rows without an error.
With a registry warehouse of bigquery and a Postgres or DuckDB dbt target, a prior value O'Brien becomes 'O\'Brien'. The dbt dialect ends the string at \', so the step fails with a syntax error.
The reference resolver is the boundary that picks the dialect, so the correction belongs there. It must use the dialect of the route that executes the step. That is the dbt adapter's dialect when the dbt route runs. The current defaultTarget helper returns a set of dialects, not one. A single-dialect fix is not established safe for projects with several profile targets, so no patch is proposed here.

packages/opencode/src/altimate/tools/sql-classify.ts:251-273 Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Block TRUNCATE settings when it ends the statement.
The SETTINGS entry in the final CODE_HARD_DENY rule excludes every target named settings, in all dialects. CREATE TASK k AS TRUNCATE settings is therefore not blocked and is classified as a write. sql_execute then asks sql_execute_write instead of refusing the statement. The same form with the target t is blocked.
The exclusion is needed only for a ClickHouse SETTINGS clause that follows a column named truncate. Limit the exclusion to a SETTINGS followed by more text, so a target at the end of the statement is still blocked.
The fix keeps ORDER BY truncate SETTINGS max_threads = 1 as a read. It also blocks TRUNCATE settings; and TRUNCATE settings at end of input. A column alias such as SELECT truncate settings; is refused as a false positive. That trade-off fits the documented best-effort model.

#1609 exposes the SQL classifier to outside agents (MCP server,

main: a ClickHouse quoted identifier ending in a backslash can hide a second statement from the classifier. The ClickHouse driver sends one statement per request, so that statement does not run.Out of scope, a follow-up: enforcing the DROP/TRUNCATE block in the database, through a restricted role or a read-only transaction where the driver supports one. That would cover statements built at run time, which no text check can see.
